as the title says, who regrets going for the best headphone and skipping the in between ones. >< I kind of regret going straight to the dt880's from my ksc75's.

I'd gladly save the money and skip the "journey".

If my journey had been a little shorter, I might still have some money in my wallet.

you say that now, but when you realize that your ears might not be able to hear the difference between the $500 and the $1000 phones and amps since you haven't took your audio journey step by step, you might regret it

heh, good point....but you can always get more money, can you get the experience back?

But I'm still in the student/broke phase, so better to wait a couple months or even a year and save up.

I'd like to think/hope that the "journey" is never over, no matter where you start. I've been lurking for the past week or so and I've decided my path will start with a pair of 650's, and then in a month or two will continue with a balanced amp, most likely the Headroom Desktop. It's like I'm planning a vacation based on recommendations from people who have been there before. But even then, there are still plenty of other headphones to listen to, and more expensive amps... there's better sources and different cables... and on and on.

I'm also quite sure that by jumping in head first, I'll be able to identify the shortcomings in my home theater setup, which is also a journey of its own.

Nope... I had a long journey. Started with Panasonic stock over-the-ears headphones with my cassette walkman (1989?)... Koss earbuds... Sennheiser HD320 phones with my PCDP, Koss Sportapros, Alessandro MS-1, and Grado HP-2. It's been a great 15+ years, and I'm looking forward to upgrading to a real home source.

I don't regret starting this journey by sniping a pair of 90's era DT990's for $86 on ebay and then buying new pads for 'em. Not at all.

I went from the Zalman surround to the Stax 2020 to the O2.

I regret nothing. Going backwards to try things is easy.
