seeing that nearly every phone and product has everything from silly to serious mods i was wondering if there was one which they got completely right, straight out of the box...without the need for custom cotton wool, blue tack, felt pads, wood carvings etc... i know ears and brains vary, but there must be a couple of phones which please more while completely unmodified, and are unanimously superior in their unmodified state.

Every phone I've ever bought, because I bought them all after audition so got the right thing first time instead of getting it wrong and buggering about with it.

If something doesn't sound good to me, I don't buy it.  And I'm not an acoustic engineer.  People who design headphones know better than me and I fully expect unintended consequences from modifications.  Maybe you can get the bass a little better, but you might pull back on the mids if you make that modification.  There's always a tradeoff when you make a change, so I don't make them.
 
Also, mods almost never increase the value of headphones.  Even the very expensive mods are a money losing proposition in the For Sale Forum.

i dont mod anything. the only eq i ever use is the hardware bass or treble boost on my XM5.  i hate imperfections or inconsistencys so could never mod or break things regardless of how it may or may not sound
