My first major experiance was with the Stax Lambda Basics. I was listening to Track 6 on Takk... by Sigur Ros, much louder than I should have been. But man, when the piano drops an octave and the guitars come in, and then singing comes it, shivers just ripped right through me. It was excellent.
Well, cant say Ive gotten to that point, as I find most lacking in some respect. I do really like my burned in pair of HD280s but the real story here is: When did you realize you NEEDED good cans?
For me it was thanks to a pair of Sony 888 buds (yeah, yeah... Sony) I got these at Heathrow on my way back to Spain from canada for my walkman (cassette walkman, this was ages ago) they sounded good, I was happy, but didnt give it much thought. Until many years later one of the drivers stopped working. I went out to buy a new pair of headphones, and by the end of the month I had bout like 6 diffirent pairs of buds none of which made me content (and this was using a cassette player, imagine). I eventually turned to the internet (I had no clue as to what model my previous buds had been, only much later did I find the small 888 marking on them) because I just couldnt live with this loss in sound quality. So I found this site and bought a pair of Senn Mx400. Now I had discovered a new source of wisdom on headphones and realized I NEEDED the good sound. If only I had spent a little less money in that airport....
So my deal wasnt hearing them and saying WOW, this rocks, it was getting used to them and when they were gone suddenly realizing most of the stuff out there was utter crap.
Given what I'd been using leading up to my first more-significant headphone purchase, I'd have to say it was the Grado SR-60 - (I had been listening to the AKG 400 unamped and though it sounded nice, the 60 really grabbed me).
