The Hour of the Bewilderbeast

If we look at what connections are used for balanced headphones, one cannot but be bewildered.
Among full size desktop amplifiers things are slightly sane, with options of 4-Pin XLR or the dual 3-Pin XLR connections. Then there are options using 6.3mm Jacks as well.
It gets really bewildering once we get to portable or other small size gear. We find some adapting camera connections, some use all kinds of miniature multi-pin connectors. Other use 3.5mm TRRS JACK (this is potentially a balanced jack) originally designed for headsets with microphones, still others bank on 2.5mm TRRS (to avoid problems with plugging things in wrongly).
We can even find mono dual 3.5mm jacks and a wide range of weird and wonderful obscure connectors never intended for headphone use..
Each month seems to bring another portable balanced headphone amp with yet another incompatible scheme of connection, leaving the potential customers bewitched, bothered, and thoroughly confused by the staggering selection of mutually incompatible connections*.
