According to Joe Boyd's fascinating book "White Bicycles", their moment in time came at Woodstock in the rain.  They refused to play in their primo opening night slot because of the weather, missed their chance and ended up a footnote to the era.  But to me they represent the late Sixties at its purest.

Such a monumental loss for the world of rock. Machine Head was one of my first vinyls, bought it for Smoke on the Water but when I heard Lazy I just couldn't believe that screaching B3 on Leslies, it blew my mind away. Then on Made in Japan, just wow, no words can describe how I felt hearing him trade licks with Blackmore (who just happens to be my favorite guitar player in rock).
