What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

At the Philharmonie for Sibelius violin concerto and Langgaard symphony 1 — an enthusiastically Nordic evening. The Sibelius was extremely good. I often search for the best metaphor to describe the experience of a conductor or instrumentalist bringing out sounds or phrases or accents I hadn’t heard before in a work (or flavors I hadn’t tasted in a coffee brewed as filter that emerge in the intensity of espresso). monet and his haystacks and cathedrals gets at it. I heard so many new turns and colors in the Sibelius it’s as if the conductor were making it do yoga and introducing new positions — new to me, if not to the transcendental work of music.

The second piece, the symphony, struck me as a melange of Sibelius and Mahler. The back row of brass came in for the end of the last movement, evidently because 17 brass weren’t enough, and the trumpets, trombones, and tuba needed to be doubled for the full effect. It was long but lots of fun. It seemed lesser than Mahler but better than a lot else. Better than Tchaikovsky for sure, and nearly as tuneful. Perhaps with an small excess of hot air, but with a lot to offer despite that.

Sibelius’s economy was always his secret weapon, one which Wagner or bruckner or frankly even Mahler could have learned from. This performance may prove the best yet - I looked through the YouTube music streaming service (I know it’s crap compared to idagio, I get it for free) and there doesn’t seem to be anything in the catalog that would hold a candle to Berlin Phil. Listen to it.

Schipol is an absolute hot mess—both our bags failed to make the transfer, which wouldn’t have been that bad, except an idiotic Italian clerk forced us to check the carry on, where we had put all the essentials, anticipating the temporary loss of our baggage. It was 13kg, she said, and the maximum is 12. There won’t be any overhead space, she said. There was plenty. It was fully booked, she said. There were a dozen open seats. So we’re without clothes and medication and the travel coffee rig, but we’re managing.

It was 94 today. I hope it cools down. Though Weissensee (near our flat) was a scrum of sunbathing.

I won't try to argue with intra-EU overhead bag rules, even in business class. I just carry a small backpack with real essentials and I check everything else. I grew up there with that kind of officiousness and I'd rather avoid it :/

I think the worst run in I had in Europe was Lufthansa back at the start of this year - think it was a KTW-BIO flight (likely through Frankfurt) - and I had an American N95 mask on in the round dust mask shape (no valve). Boarded, asked if it was FFP2 or FFP1, said it was American N95 that was our version of FFP2, and pointed to the N95 stamp on the chin. I was told that was not good enough, and I had to wear the airline provided surgical mask. Worst part, I didn't learn so when I did KRK-FRA-BIO earlier this month, I put on my same style American N95 dust mask and had the same issue, except they understood American N95 worked for FFP2. vueling had no issue with the mask, but was dead set only FFP2 - turned a woman away from boarding until she was able to locate an FFP2 since surgical masks were no longer allowed.

I had the same experience several times in healthcare settings in the US, demands that I replace my well-fitted 3M N95s with useless surgical masks when showing up for an appointment. Officious ignorance transcends borders :triportsad:

Credentials and University ID did not help me in that situation either.

Buffoons!

This is the problem when front desk people aren't educated in the difference between N95, KN95, paper masks, etc...
This is where an office manager should step in and correct the silliness. All masks except N100, valve masks, and bandanas are "surgical masks". Even cloth masks were surgical masks 50 years ago.

Y'all might have better luck traveling by train, Bosie. :)

I am taking the Deutsche Bahn to the Eurostar back to London for the final leg, because I have had about enough with airports.

A bit of elaboration of the upcoming Urd’s sockets/IO: There is, of course an onboard transport, its output being connected tp S/PDIF, AES/EBU, and USB. In addition, there are two additional USB inputs which can be switched to compare the transport along with two other USB inputs (streamer, etc.). Sonic sophisticates will use the USB out (unison, of course.). Using the other outputs is like farting at the queen’s ball. It can drive others away. Also, all USB IO is isolated.

Any de-****ering / isolation on the USB in -> Unison out path?

I don’t know when you are planning to travel to London, but I presume you are aware of the rail strike across much of the UK this week…

I‘m afraid I don’t know if Eurostar is affected.

In Central Europe until the 3rd. Currently on a side trip to Copenhagen—Hamburg Friday-Saturday for the Bartok piano concerto 2 and alpine symphony in the Elbphilharmonie, which I have been informed goes by Elphie among the locals. Enjoying bike infrastructure and Proust - just got to page 200 - and the Roast coffee shop, the best in the city. KSE1500 is 7 years old but unlike the iPhone 6s and 2015 MacBook Pro, continues to work as well as the day I got it. I should update my review with long term ownership thoughts. I love it. Just the best thing to happen to head fi for travelers since ever. If only they could license Mike’s IP and stick a better dac inside…

Electra was excellent. See also curtain call and bust of Wagner at the Staataoper (basement level, next to mens restroom). Other upcoming performances are Mahler 1 and Chopin PC1 on Thursday and Falstaff on Saturday. Potential Fanciulla on Sunday. Meistersinger tbd.

Mahler 1st, the first movement is my favorite in that symphony. Music out of the morning mist and dew of spring. Always strikes me in a similar, yet different way, of the way Das Rheingold opens.

They're selling a heavily used rental bike for $709. OK.
