Has anyone heard Teodor Currentzis's Mozart da ponte recordings? I think he's one of the freshest interpreters I've heard in years. Vigorous, sensitive, with great casts.

No -- It is encouraging that we can have a current artist to appreciate!

BTW, I will be listening to Jochum's Meistersinger later this evening and will BOLO that theme you mentioned.

How hard would it be to add an analog-digital converter to Mani? I didn't think I would make the cross into vinyl, but Max Lorenz's only Tannhauser (1943, w/ Arthur Rother conducting) only exists on LP, and via amazon.de: https://www.amazon.de/gp/offer-listing/B00F63N2VU/ref=tmm_vnl_used_olp_sr?ie=UTF8&condition=used&qid=&sr=

I know some turntables like to build in USB out, but if I'm going to the trouble of acquiring an LP, I do not want some two-bit (used colloquially) chip to create the digital file. Obviously upgradability says put it in a separate box, but are there thermal or other reasons for that as well?

It would be a superior engineering solution to put the A/D module in a separate box.  It would be a very interesting goal to produce such a box and have it available by say, late winter, at an affordable price.

It is my policy to not comment on other products, but I will generalize:  the integrated, inexpensive, USB out turntables will have audible artifacts clearly audible on pre-WW2 recordings; they also may have uncompliant or very short life span stylii which places any lp, much less historical examples, at risk of damage.

I have a Thorens unit like that and I find it acceptable.

What I am looking for is a test tone album so I can confirm its frequency response and/or correct deviations if necessary with Audacity when I do a needledrop.  Anyone know of an LP like that?

@Baldr, in terms of pre-WW2 recordings, where do you come down on all the arguments about selectable EQ curves; i.e. Columbia, Decca, RIAA etc?

To answer the question, I am in favor of an inverse of the appropriate eq curve (NAB, Columbia, etc.) utiliszed in the early LP recordings (before the industry standardized on RIAA by 1956).  The difficult part is research needed if the record is not clearly marked.   This would be a product of too specialized interest for Schiit, but if there is sufficient interest I could be persuaded to publish non copyrighted schematics.

@Baldr Mike, I'm sitting at my desk at work listening to the Schiit Mimby (with my Vali 2) and I just want to thank you for this unbelievably awesome piece of Schiit! I can't thank you enough for making this tech accessible financially!

Yes!

The selectable devices or defeatable EQ phono preamps are either cheap or way too high end/specialized.

I bet there would be interest in taking said schematics and making up a through hole DIY board.

You can apply any type EQ you want in post.

Here is some info for those interested (with schematic): http://sound.westhost.com/project91.htm

And 78 RPM Audacity EQ curves: http://wiki.audacityteam.org/wiki/78rpm_playback_curves

Not super combo burrito filters or optimized on the time domain, but still.
