What a long, strange trip it's been -- (Robert Hunter)

And yet, you post this youtube vid:thinking:

It would appear the vast majority of the people who have seen and rated this video liked it (2.5k to 81).
Some people who are not the "cognoscenti" possibly might enjoy the "Reader's Digest" version and then might sometimes go on to try the real deal (?).

If it is art, it is not popular. If it is popular, it is not art.

At least you allow for the possibility of things that are not popular and are not art, that's a relief

edit:
"If it is art, it is not popular", if in time it becomes popular does it cease to be art?
Or is that only the view of elitists :man_in_tuxedo:

I want to disagree with this blanket premise but I fear it may be accurate. There is something to be said for the opinion of the masses but great art is rarely ratified by popular vote.

That being said, I have no problem with compilations or excerpts. It’s not the full experience but it can be enjoyable just the same.

So...are musicians artists?...only if they compose/improvise/etc.?...only if they're unpopular?

Maybe. Some musicians are artists, some are not. If we look at the classical genre (on which this topic was started) it's fair to say that even the most "popular" aren't anything approching the level of fame as a moderately successful pop musician or actor/actress. All can walk down the street, go out to eat, and enjoy a "normal" life without paparazzi chasing them or being mobbed by fans.

Think of how many people have listened to the Ring... since 1876. Consider how many recordings there are. Is the Ring still art? I think so.

Hmmm...this is a movie soundtrack that I wouldn't expect to popular...oh well, there's no disputing taste!

I think the original Schoenberg quote was "If it is art, it is not for all, and if it is for all, it is not art."
A sentiment with which I disagree. :)

Well stated, @Ableza. I would just add that Herr Schoenberg sounds like an elitist bonehead.
That's my report from Tennessee ... on to the moonshine. :)

Maybe he just really needed to take a Schiit

Well, I can testify that makes me feel better.
Perhaps the John Wayne German toilet paper stood in his way. LOL
