I'm wondering... Does having a USB input connected to a (non gen 5) input degrade the audio quality when listening via the SPDIF? Where I'm coming from is that the USB device is potentially injecting undesirable noise into the dac, even if there's nothing playing on USB.

Correct. From @Baldr: "The quality oriented USB user would prefer Eitr > Gadget > (If needed) S/PDIF to AES/EBU transformer. Spinners can use the S/PDIF in and out."

You don't need RMAF for Eitr impressions. TL; DR: if you have a DAC that takes S/PDIF coax, and a source that produces USB, get the Eitr and use the > $1000 you save compared to a competitive setup (eg. Aries AES, Berkeley Alpha USB) to improve your DAC/amp/transducers.
