I got my pair today. Registered, so I had to sign for it. Tracking was good for me all the way through
That VSD1 lettering is only on one side and a pretty dark gray. Seems pretty funny now cause It even disappears in the light due to the reflective nature of the shells. A non-issue for me. I know I can't see it and I really doubt anyone else will unless they are holding them and looking them over.
I didn't like the narrow silicone tips so I put the 3580 tips on them and they sound good. I then put my CKP tips on them. They can with some phones give better sub-bass reach. They did the trick. Better sub bass reach than either the XBA-40 or the first ever batch of GR07 I had. So, I'm happy there. They won't extend as far as those phones in the treble.
The design seems to allows better tuning of the sound than the GRxx body style. You can take on or take off some bass, or better put, change the most seal you can get. I've already learned how to aim them to take off a bit of bass. They haven't run in yet but they are capable of pretty big bass. Explained why one report showed them as fairly balance and another had them as quite bassy. All makes a bit more sense now.
Still a bit of the VSONIC dryness is present in the mids. Cool, clean and clear on the mids.Well separated and very intelligible just not very sweet or lush.
The bass needs to run in but it goes low enough, is fairly tight and controlled out of the box, and leaves the mids alone unless you go for the most seal(maybe bigger tips even) and then they can warm the lower mids some. Good timbre ad some detail down low but still sounds like it hasn't cleaned up and layered out yet.
Can't say too much about the treble vs. other Vsonic models except for it reach extends further than the GR02 and not as far as the GR07. Balanced better than the treble tipped early GR07 and nicely more present than the GR02(silver version, I have not heard). A good amount to match with most players. Shouldn't offend those who don't like bright phones and still enough to satisfy those who like some treble and don't want smoothed over or dark. Some nice clarity up top and good detail and transparency. Sibilance is held in check unless the source is bright one. Still, any change with burn in may yet tame it a bit. A little bit of a peak, just to my ears, accentuating cymbals a bit. Not in a bad way though. Those familiar with the CKN70 won't find the VSD1 as troublesome with peaks or brightness.
Early on but a fine little phone for a great price that, as has been mentioned already, makes a great all rounder. Some bass and fun and some nice technical ability as well.
