May give the 840 pads a whirl as I can try the on the ATH-M50 and also my HFI-780 (which currently wears ATH-M50 pads which is good but not quite right) - does anyone know is there any difference in size/dimensions between the 840 and 440 pads?

Once the SRH940 velour pads are out (in a few months) they will definitely be interesting on M50s.

The 840 pads are slightly larger than the 440 pads if I recall. The 840 are definitely just a smidge larger than the M50 pads. Not sure how the M50 pads are in relation to the 440.

So now I'm wondering whether the 440 pads might be better to try with the HFI-780. The M50 pads fit but are definitely slightly larger and a fair bit looser than the original HFI-780 pads. If the 840 are larger still they might not fit.

I'll be very interested to hear the results of the new pads. Though, to be honest, the 840 pads were so detrimental to the sound quality that I don't have high hopes.

It's very unlikely that the 940 pads resemble the 840 ones in sound signature, they are velour vs pleather for one, also it's very possible that the cushioning material used in the two are different; not to mention differences in underside membranes..
 
It'll be a wildcard whether or not 940 pads will be detrimental or beneficial to the M50 sound. Although, from all the 940 headphone reviews, it seems that those cans have extremely well-extended highs and bass that's rather tamed compared to 840 - part of that may very well be due to the pads?

Understandable given that it's velour, how much (an approximate percentage-wise) bass reduction though?
 
Looking forward to hearing how you compare the changes to the treble and mids, and possibly to the soundstage.

I tried swapping DT250 pads from my V6, and gave up after sort of ripping the pads(VERY tight).  In comparison, the 940 pads are looser.
 
I don't really know how to rate the reduction, but it was the first thing I noticed.  I'd say maybe 30-40% reduction in "punch" and maybe 10-20% reduction in volume?  I don't know, I'm not good at describing sound.
 
To bring the bass back up, I cut some envelopes up to cover the ports and now the bass seems to be about the same as the original pads.

How I have it right now:

 
The velour 940 pads on top of the stock ones.  I sort of got this idea from Neil Peart's setup, and I had done it before by putting the old V6 pads on top of the stock ones(not permanently, but using tape just to hold it in place and pressure from the band/my head keeping it there)...I actually liked it but the V6 pads were a little too small/shallow.  The fitment is so much better with the stacked pads(I guess I have a small head?) and the bass is back.  Also, the 940 pads directly on the housing slid around a lot(as stated above, they fit loosely on there to begin with).  The signature still sounds similar to stock; I may try removing some of the cover material(I don't know the technical term; but the piece of fabric that covers the driver) and see how that works out.  Though, otherwise I'm digging this setup, at the moment. 
 
Does anyone know how the 840 pleather pads compare to the stock m50 pads?  Not sound-wise, but comfort/feel.  I like the way the Sony V6 pads feel, while the M50s just sticky/feel like plastic.

What do you mean by the ports? Holes on the grill? On the back of the pad? ??

I prefer the 840 pads. More comfortable and better isolation (not a huge difference though).
