V-MODA M-100: Discussion/Feedback, Reviews, Pics, etc.

how does the m100 compare to the hd25-ii

Well both headphones are superb in sound quality. They are actually very similar in terms of sound detail. But the M100 has more punchy bass into it. I don't own an HD251-II but have used my friend's pair several times as well as the M100 before making a purchase. So when I came to deciding which one to get, I went for the M100 because it is more appealing in terms of looks, build and more options with the accessories (extra kevlar wrapped cables, nice looking hard case, replaceable shields and can be personalized with laser engraving).

Apologies if I have or presented bad info.  I was under the impression from posts on the Verza forum that the issue was with the S4 and all DAC-bypass amps.

I understand that your experience with the S4 is theoretical, and all of that's fine, but while I respect your empirical assessments of equipment you've actually used, your impression of the S4 is false. I wouldn't want people to take it as gospel when the S4 is incredibly versatile in terms of accommodating USB DACs.

The issue with the Verza arises from the fact it was designed to work with the SIII, which Val owned without realizing that the S4's being built around a later iteration of Android would pose problems for a DAC designed for 4.1. That was the same problem experienced by James at Fiio: The SIII worked with the E07k and the S4 worked with the E17, but neither phone worked with the other DAC.  That's been sorted with the E18, which works with both the SIII and the S4.

The specific point which I hope you'll raise in the future is the S4's compatibility with the Verza.  If someone were buying a smartphone in hopes it would work with that particular DAC, then your attempt to warn them would be helpful.  Personally, I doubt we'll see the same problem with a later iteration of the Verza (if there is one).

Before you allow comments about the S4 on the Verza forum to congeal into dogma in your memory (as can happen to us all), have a look at DanBa's lengthy thread about Android and DACs.  Every five pages, he provides a list of DACs which are compatible with all kinds of specific Android devices, and the S4 has a very extensive list.

Here's the present version of DanBa's compatibility list for the S4:

A list of standard USB DAC reportedly interworking with the Android-powered smartphone Samsung Galaxy S4:
Stock Samsung Galaxy S4 > digital USB audio out >> USB OTG cable (ID pin grounded) >> standard USB DAC >> amp >> headphones

Any advice for a new M-100 owner on swapping out the ear pads? I'v got a pair of XL pads I want to try out, but for the life of me I can't seem to get the stock ones off, even after watching a couple youtube videos. Is there a trick or direction to pull them in?

pull inward toward the center and up harder than you would think is required

I'd also recommend always pulling from the bottom of the pad, since there isn't a clip at the bottom-most point of the earcup. When removing one of my XL pads from the top, I managed to rip the pad halfway off its plastic base.

I was luckily able to do some advanced surgery and salvage it, but that was a "FUUUUUUUUU--" moment, to be sure...

Got it off. Took me about 7 attempts since I got them to work up the courage to use enough force haha. Loving the comfort of the XL pads so far.
