Hi guys.
Just bought my HD650 but I'm looking for some upgrade phones.
I usually spend 4-5 months with one pair of phones to gather money.
So, the next step will be in the price range of $500. (used)
I need them to be better than the HD650, but still to be on the "dark side"
I have and old version HD650 (thank God) I would like to have a similar sound signature (i.e not harsh highs - highs in my HD600 were a bit too much for me), laid-back.
They have to work well with my Schiit Asgard because I especially love this amp and would not like to exchange it. So only efficient orthos and dynamics are welcome.
Thanks guys!
Edit: Headphones owned: HD555->HD540->K601->HD600->HD650. I liked them all, only HD540 was very harsh, but was a very big improvement from the HD555.

yes, save some more money for the real HD650 upgrade; LCD-2

Well, though I'm totally confused by your comment that the HD540 was very harsh but still better than the 555, I agree that the LCD-2 is the only logical upgrade for you. Better break open the piggy bank.

As of Jason Stoddard, the Asgard has problems driving the HE4.
pp312: The HD540 was more harsh, but it was much more detailed and its lows were very real and deep.

So LCD2?
How much they usually cost second hand?

About twice your budget. They are fairly new so the used market still holds the value close to purchase price of $900.

I have the HD650 now and I'm very happy with them. The HD650 responds very well to a cable upgrade. Having listened to them before the next logical upgrade for me is the LCD2.

IT's not really easy to upgrade from HD650, it's already the king at it's price range and really stand out for itself among the old school trio, the upgrade from HD650 would be one of the flagship products.  they are all among 1k mark, like the ps1000 , LCD-2 HD800 , T1 etc. and frankly only the LCD-2 has the somewhat moderate similarity of HD650. I have 650 and LCD-2 with me right now, and I can tell you they are quite different. Despite the LCD-2 excels in pretty much every aspect, the HD650 has more prominent on vocal but veiled, and lacking focus, that is the vocal would stand out than other department, but not very concentrated, and blended in to the air. And I'm not really sure if asgrad is powerful enough. To drive the LCD-2, you need at least 2 watts output into over 50 ohm.  And you need to know from this point on, you will begin to suffer a huge amount of diminishing return, the twice of the money probably bring you less than half of the improvement, or much less. If i were you I might try something different, a ATH woodie, or denon maybe. Or I would just spent some money on the aftermarket cables.

Is that really so? I know that the LCD-2 rewards greater output, but do you really need 2 watts (which almost no amps outside the lyr provide) to drive them? I'd like to hear more opinions on that.
