It might just be me, but I think the sibilance has toned down after this mod. I didn't do an A/B test for that...

Oh nice-did you order some already? What will you be pairing them with?

No not yet, hope to have it by the end of this week. But I will be using it with my CLAS which is a very neutral DAC and my SR-71b on balanced (yes i'm getting the 2900 balanced).

Hmmm not sure where i'd be getting them, but I will probably pay the outlandish price because balanced is so worth it

Just a follow up to the "which complement headphone to get?" question. I found a used AKG K701 for £115 on eBay, so I thought I might as well give it a go. At that price I should be able to resell them easily without huge loss if I don't like them. From what I gather from reviews it should be almost the direct opposite of the Pro 900... Open, airy, mid-focussed, lacking bass impact, etc. I'll let you know how it compares to the Pro 900 when I receive it. Now wondering which genres to experiment with. Obviously it's gonna suck at electronic music, especially when compared to the Pro 900, but it should be good for instrumental songs, vocals, classical, etc.

I've had the pleasure to audition the K701 (Danish link: http://hoved-fi.dk/viewtopic.php?f=11&t=393) and when it comes to female vocals, acoustic music and classical pieces, it wipes the floor with pretty much anything else I've heard. The ATH W1000 is still the king of vocals, but the K701 has a HUGE soundstage.

I plan on getting a K701 myself to supplement the Pro 900

Be careful with the K701.  If you're a sucker for soundstage, it'll be hard to go back to the Pro 900.  I don't think this will be a problem, however, as anyone who owns a Pro 900 is also a sucker for bass, something that the K701 provides almost zero of.

The K702s are amazing to me-just be sure to burn them in a TON-and get a proper amp for them. To me, they sounded like crap out of the box-but they will improve quite a bit in 48 hours-and will continue to get more refined up to 500 hours. Just run them continuously for 2 weeks and see why many will tell you that. Also, what amp will you be running with them? Properly amped, these have better bass impact than DT 880s and AD2000s. They are absolutely amazing for acoustic music-maybe the best out there! Female vocals are excellent as well. Be sure to give us your comparisons!

Y'all should give this a listen on a pair of K701/K702:

I have the DVD, it sounds nothing short of AMAZING on a pair of K701.

Edit: It ain't bad on the Pro 900 either

I owned K701's and K702's at one point but sold em to finance the JH16's. They are definitely lovely cans. They require a decent amount of juice to get the best sound possible, but they are nice once you have it. I tried with my iBasso D10 first (mediocre), then straight into my home theatre system and it was like BAM. As already noted, the exact opposite of Pro900's. Being open, they lack bass impact, but imo the extension is there. The treble extension is nice, I found it a bit harsh on some tracks but it was perfect for others. I listened to quite a bit of jazz on both of em before I sold them and I think they are a good complement to the Pro900's if you are ever looking for a change. And comfort... beware of the bumps on the K701. I think they are as bad as everybody says. Having owned both, I can definitely say the K702 has a more comfortable headband since the bumps are positioned differently, but not quite as comfy as Pro900's or Hd-25's. And, if you don't like what the K701's have to offer, they sell like hotcakes.

On the topic of Pro900, I have never found that the treble on them is harsh or fatiguing. I don't know if it's just me, but I think the S-Logic creates a sound that is 'loud' but never harsh. The bass is always there (duh) but it's not like Beats bass where it overpowers everything else. The treble extends nicely and I find it is present in the perfect balance. I STILL haven't figured out how to fold the earcups up. Tried extending them all the way, the swivel hinge simply doesn't go far enough for me to be able to do that :S. I just noticed that it seems like Ultrasone was begging people to dual-entry mod these by putting a jack-sized piece on the right cup where an imaginary cable could go...

Got my Pro 900s a day ago. The cans are paired with a Matrix mini-i.

I noticed that the cables included were a bit too short for my taste so I am wondering where I could find a good cable for the cans.

Reqs: Non-coiled 3m long.

Thanks.

I made one for mine, 1.2m + matching 2m extender:

It's a pretty easy DIY job, Qables has the 3.5mm threaded plugs :)

I just did some A/Bing with my pro2900 and w1000x playing the song "Hedonism", and I actually prefer the pro2900. The neutrality and speed of the pro2900 just complement the smoothness of her voice better. The midrange and midbass seemed a bit overbearing with the w1000x. I was quite surprised by this result, as I generally prefer the w1000x for female vocals.
