Have you done the HD650 comfort mod to the headband? You buy a Sennheiser HD650 headband and replace the weak stock one.

Also I swapped pads to Mr Speakers Alpha pads. Better isolation and overall better sound and tighter bass.

I haven't done the HD650 mod because I can't listen to them for long periods of time regardless of the headband due to it getting warm inside the cups after awhile. Does the alpha pads help at all with that? I imagine the thermal properties of leather make it even more insulating than the velour that is already decent but not cold enough for my tastes.

Yes I'd say if those velours get hot, the Alphas may be an issue.

I need a good amp recommendation. ATM I have: Xonar DX - Fio E12 - Pro 900.

- The highs are too sharp. vocals are just piercing when i hear 'shhhh' . Bass is O.K. but i need to tame the sibilance...

any recommendations?

sometimes its the USB cable...u using one? not sure if u are using one on the FIIO..i lost touch?
the modded jmoneypads help to tone down the highs too...
the velorpads put my ears too near the drivers.

For years I lurked this thread, just waiting for my chance to participate. Finally, I bought a pair from another Head-Fi'er, and cannot begin to describe my elation. I admit, my anticipation probably overrode any chance for disappointment, but I'm okay with that.

Two years and counting with these awesome Pro 900s. Is there even now any serious competition for basshead use?

You should hear them with Alpha pads.....wow.

I've got a pair of Darth Beyers arriving in a few days I feel may be at the Pro900 level. If so I'll be a happy man. We shall see.

Darug Beyer look cool! Did you get them brand new or 2nd hand?

2nd hand. I'll be the fourth owner of this particular pair. Royal Mahogany, deep cup, excited and curious to hear them!

Sig Pro is a great phone.........but if bass is important to you (as it is me) the Pro900 with Alpha pads to me sounded as good and much better bass. Heck, even with stock pads that's how I feel. I'm surely in the minority but we only care what we think. As you said, for the price the Pro900 is quite the bargain. I paid $252 I believe.......real good bargain to me.

Never got the nerve up to try to remove them, but they are NOT well engineered 1/4 twist off units like the Pro900.  Same goes for the Edition 8 that I just got - seems I've read they are double stick taped on (not sure if that is a rumor or fact).

Too bad, the case, the pad design/attachment, spare pad and removable cable ALL make this their best engineered headphone in my very humble opinion.  I have had the Sig Pro and now the Edition 8 so that's pretty good reference points.  The Pro900 is just so good.

Oh, and the Sig Pro pads TO ME were uncomfortable after about 30-45 minutes.  No such problem with Pro900 or Edition 8.
