To buy or not to buy Grado RS1 ?

You're kidding right? Most here (including myself) place it along with the SR325s as some of John Grado's biggest mistakes.

Really? You say the RS1 is better than the GS1000i? Why would there be so many positive reviews?

Positive reviews? Where are they?

The best production Grados today IMO are the RS1i. The PS1000s have corrected many of the problems of the GS1000s...like the substantial "U" in the FR and overly hot treble. Then throw in the HUGE mid-bass hump and there you go...

This is not a surprise, anyone who prefers the grado "house" sound will say the RS1 is the best. GS1000i deviates from that sound. There is a reason why I stuck with a RS1 and decided to upgrade the cable was because there really is no "upgrade" after the RS1 imo. Everything after it is a different sound.

<facepalm> Here we go again, with the Grado faithful (?) electing to fight over which is the *worst* model in the lineup. The OP wants advice on the RS1, generally accepted as a very good headphone, and we are going to duke it out over non-RS1 models ?

This is absolutely true wrt the PS1000s. But the hot treble and massive mid-bass hump of the GS1000s are some real fatal flaws for me (along with the large deviation from the "classic Grado house sound).

Why not...some others have mentioned other Grado models and those of us who have heard / owned many of them, still insist that the RS1/RS1i's are the best ones in production. So slight detours may naturally arise.

PS1000 looks to be in the middle of bunch.

The amount of current that passes through the headphones does not determine the quality of the sound produced.  It just means that at that frequency the intensity will be greater.

For my main headphones, I listen to RS-1, HD600 and D7000.  I find myself listening to HD600 about 80% of the time and the RS-1 about 5% of the time (mostly to varieties of rock and jazz).  With the right amp, HD600 are non-fatiguing, clear and have a better tonal balance imo.  They also have gobs more spatial detail than RS-1 and cost me about 1/2 the price.

All I know is I'll take the 325's over the 225's any day of the week. I hardly think they are a mistake...there are plenty of people that would also agree with me. But regardless...this thread is not about the SR325 or your opinion of them or mine for that matter.

I have listened to my friend's RS1i and I own an RA-1, battery version.  I agree with everyone that said the RA-1 isn't worth it but I bought it because it was 50% off at work ($150).  It sounds pretty good with Grados but it will not be powerful enough to drive other headphones like AKGs, Sennheisers, or Beyerdynamic.

For the couple of hours that I listened to my friend's RS1i's, I was throughly impressed.  It is the most transparent headphone I have ever listened to.  Everything sounded like it was glistening.  It's hard to describe but it left an impression on me.  I own a pair of RS2i's because I couldn't bring myself to shell out the extra cash for RS1i.  I regret not saving up some more to get the RS1i.  They're that good.  Even though I've auditioned higher end headphones such as the PS1000 and HD800, the RS1i will always be one of my dream headphones.
