when trying to upgrade to your first pair of non-sucky headphones!!!!  I've been using Koss UR-40's since 2007 and want to get something nicer on a budget.  Here's what I'm working with:

$150 max
IPOD source with no amplifier
Heavy metal music preference
Over ear, closed is preferrable

So far, I've visited the local Best Buy and seen the following:

Senn HD 201, HD 203, HD 205, and HD 428

Would any of these make sense given my preferences?

Sorry to dump another recommendation thread on everyone.  I do plan on being an active member of the forum for whatever's that's worth.

I think you might want something from Grado as that caters more to the rock/ metal camp.

All the headphones you listed are relatively cheap. Just a word of mention, you generally get what you pay for. I'm not saying those are bad headphones, all I'm saying is if your budget is $150 max, yet you are looking in the under $50 range. Do you want a significant upgrade, or are you just looking for some alternative?

If I have seen this thread earlier, I should have suggested you the Senn HD25-1II. But since you have bought M50, enjoy your music!

If you're looking for closed cans here are some impressions I made from three of the more recommended headphones:

If you don't need the isolation I would suggest the Grado SR-222(i).
