The Zishan dsd's corner

Sep 5, 2019 at 11:49 PM Post #2,446 of 3,716
I am coming to the Zishan DSD thread alot later than others, but I just took delivery of an DSD (4497) and am pleasantly surprised by the quality of sound. I was planning to play around with various opamps and have some burson's on their way as well as a variety of others that have been mentioned in this thread so far. Actually taking delivery soon of a 4490 version also, so will be interested to compare as mentioned by Themilkman46290

Don't think you will be disappointed, but the v5i will take some case mod and pcb work.

Not sure if I ever posted the latest iteration of my attempt to mod DSD keeping it closer to stock yet capable of driving BAs too.

Here you go :L3000:

Tell us more, what has improved?

Tell us more, what has improved?
It was an interesting one...
I removed output caps and resistors, replaced transistors for Infineon and reduced emitter resistors to about 5Ohm (from 22Ohm).
Added caps around transistors that improve biasing and output impedance.
Output DC is 0.1 and 0.3mV and it works with BA's nicely.
At this stage the sound is slightly colored, but I plan to replace OP275 with AD8620 soon as I think they are the culprits.
All in all it's as good as heavily modded DSD with paralleled 1622s on the output, but much easier implementation.
PS: obviously all LDOs are upgraded, also clocks and VREF beefed up to about 1200uF

OK, here comes ultimate DSD mod, maybe slightly unexpected...
What you need is to buy M365 scooter, hack it using m365botox website to remove speed limit (use at your own risk!) and ride around your town in the middle of the night while listening to your Zishan )modded or not).
My DSD sounds like never before with this mod! :L3000:

At least you would have gone out doing what you love.

I'm still confused about line out on DSD pro, some say it's a lineout/coaxial combo, others that it's just coaxial, mine doesn't work in line out mode (just a slight hiss is audible), what's the truth? Also what kind of coaxial would that be? A bit confused here.

Coaxial out is on the USB socket side, it's SPDIF output and with the right cable it would work with DACs that have SPDIF input (I used my DSD as a transport for mojo, just because I could).
2.5mm balanced out is technically a line output (at least I never saw it presented as HP out by Zishan, also it is set up similar to balanced line out in AK4497 evaluation board datasheet), but I'm aware of only 1 portable HP amp that can take a balanced input...

EDIT: I see now Ivan already replied.

It's SPDIF OUT.
I made a cable, it uses the ground and the tip of the 3.5mm jack, a coax cable and a male RCA connector on the other end.
The coaxial cable should be 75 ohm, but in my experience if you don't have 75ohm and use a 50ohm cheap audio interconnect cable, it works for short spdif cables.
The coax cable outside copper wire braid is the shield and must be connected to the jack ground on one end and to the RCA ground on the other end.

First I tried with a 3.5mm TRS (stereo jack) using the ground and the tip of the jack, soldered to a coax cable and SPDIF out works, music plays.
Then I used a 3.5mm TRRS jack and I measured that there is voltage in some of the contacts that aren't used for spdif, so I decided to make the cable with a 3.5mm TRRS, I used: ground and tip - SPDIF out works, music plays.

Finally, i can rolling amp gain on my zishan dsd
Sorry for my language, this is my first post on headfi

BTW any suggestion for opamp on my dsd, now im using ad797brz for gain, and ad828 for lpf
Impresion now good 3d but the guitar distorsion too warm for me
Nice job, been thinking about doing something like that on my 4490 dsd, but haven't got the "minerals" to keep soldering and playing with the delicate plastic board, all ready ruined my z3 doing a similar mod.... But after seeing yours, it is tempting
