if you have owned the lp2 I would not get the ws99 it does not have more impact than the lp2's but it is a lot clearer with about 70 percent of the lp2's impact

LP2 is a huge basshead (very midbass heavy, slight stronger midbass than subbass) can though with some bass bleeding over into the mids, 70% of LP2 sounds pretty suitable to me. LP2 also have pretty veiled highs which appearently WS99 doesn't.

Got mine today! My iPod onlyable to show a little bit of their potential, but the WS99 still sound very effortlessly good!
Break in for an afternoon & now sound's getting better already. The boxed feeling is almost gone!
I wonder if a Fiio E11 will pair up well with my macbook and ipod nano 5gen using a LOD output?
Edit: I feel that these cans isn't mean to pull out the biggest bass as it without an amp, it's rather a quite balance cans with a big potential to become a club-alike bassheadphone if paired with the right amp. The overall sound feel so enjoyable and efforless. Soundstage is quite well too.
Definitely a keeper!

But my main problem with my Fiio E6 amp is, using the LOD connected with my iPod Nano gen5, the volume is defening loud with a slight click of the volume control. Trying to fix it

First time I'm listening to them at the moment I'm typing. Loving the sound.. sooo strong sound.

Bass: FAST and with a good impact. It feels like a kickdrum really (I'm a drumer), the response of these is great. The bass just feels realistic, like directly coming from an instrument. There is a move to them, like if they were carrying more air than others. It goes deep but has a strength to it, you can feel the headphones are powerful right from the beginning. What I like about the bass is that there is like sub bass, middle bass and high bass and you can separate the ones from the others very well even if they arrive at the same time. It's like having more steps in the bass. Sorry if I'm not so clear I'm french

Mids: Less present than the bass but smooth, globally these headphones are warm but it's surprising to hear so many details at the same time. I'll have to listen to vocals more to see how the WS99 do in this area. From a first listening the mids could me a bit more "open" sounding though. It's like they are too soft/ shy, at least from a first listening.

Treble: I REALLY like them, detailed and not agressive at all but accurate. They give a nice complement to the punchy bass. It opens the sound and has some spark to it. The spark that makes you smile. They are just as fast too. I listened to "fatty boom boom" from die antword and you can tell the WS99 can handle the speed very good. There is a communicative energy coming from these cans.

Overall it seems they are dedicated for EDM and these types of music. They really shine on electro. I'll have to do more comparisons, especially concerning the mids that feel a bit "closed" for my liking. I had less bass heavy headphones before so that might explain why I'm missing a bit of air in that particular area.

I have to say I'm no headphone freak, I only got 3 of them (M50, Uptown and these) so take what I say with a grain of salt . I've good ears from the few feedbacks I got but that doesn't make me a professionnal tester at all

A couple hours ago my impression is the same as you. Let it play overnight or something. You'll be surprised by the mid. Killer mid with female and jazz vocal!

I bought them used but in like new condition and they have a few hours on them already. The seller told me 12h, but I'll see if the mids open a bit with time. I'm listening to Billy Holiday right now :)

I have a stupid question: generally when you unplug a jack is it better to turn it at the same time or just unplug it straight?

edit: I'm listening to more and more jazz songs and mids are better on vocals than on the music I listened before (mostly electro). I wouldn't say they shine though having always a little a bit of cover to it. Did I mentioned the drums sound AWESOME on these cans? I love the breathe of the impacts so much, I've never heard anything comparable before with headphones.

When drums sound excellent it's usually sign of headphone capable of handling bass with speed and texture and having sufficient midbass to give a solid taut "punch".

You know you want one RPG. I think you read enough impressions to know what these will sound like..I did a A/B against my D2000 yesterday for KimChee. These definitely have the more engaging tuning with much faster bass over the D2000. The mids are much more in your face vs the classic D2000..

For the guys that just got them. It is a good idea to burn these in real good 100-150 plus hours recommended to get the best out of them. Also while not 100% necessary I do recommend you guys try these amped.. These big 53mm drivers amp extremely well and will benefit from more powerful sources.

Now I know you're an AT superfan and all, but better than a D2K? I have a pair and had the WS99 for a few days and for me there was no way. And I was driving with a vintage Kenwood integrated so there was plenty of power.

That's the headphone world tho, we all hear differently.

What did you feel was lacking on the WS99 compared to other headphones you tried?

I forgot to speak about the comfort. For my head and ears it is good so far. The size is a little weird though, I have small/medium ears I would say and they are a mix of over the ear and on ear headphones. I have more space in my Uptowns. It's not a problem but as it sits on a very little part of your ears you end up feeling it. If you want your ears to totally fit inside it's tight. Maybe japanese have smaller ears

I forgot to say WS99 are totally portable, the size and design make it very convenient for going outside too. The build is not as good as the M50 in my opinion but it's light and nice looking on the head, you won't get too much attention. Just the AT logo will let others notice you like good sound :)

I love my D2000 that is why I own one. I am a fan of many sound sigs not just one. To me if it is done right it is done right. Analytical is probably the least of my fave sigs but even then if it is done right at least I can listen some classical properly..I know the WS99 is not for everyone but to me it is the one headphone I can grab knowing it will perform for me every time.

Oregonian seems to enjoy V-shape sound :p Suppose he doesn't enjoy the fullier / warmer WS99, usually it takes some time before you start enjoying a lushy midrange (which to the V-shape sound lover will seem muddy/unclear and unengaging).

I used to love heavily exaggerated V-shape sound like worse than that of PRO900 (abused EQing) but these days I hate it when highs are pushed beyond midrange, I prefer a good balance between mids and highs. Weird how your preferences can change that much... these days I prefer a more lush weightly and pretty "in-your-face" midrange with aprox 8dB of bass boost seems right for me and non-empasized highs. Pretty much that of M-Audio Q40 why I love these headphones so much, right now they are the headphone with the sound I love. Maybe my preferences will change in the future, perhaps but right now I'm enjoying this sound. Still planning to check WS99 out as they seem to have the sound I love, just unsure if it will be bassheavy enough.

I almost didn't stop listening to the WS99 and I'm loving them more and more. They're great on hip hop and french rap too (I like rap better than hip hop, hip hop has become a business while rap is still an act of resistance)

If you don't know french rap bands I really dig these ones:

Best with R&B IMO. I've yet to hear any can that does r&b as well. Hip hop is nice and all but they have a tad too much mid bass. They aren't IMO the best at everything (rock, classical) because they have too much bass and not enough highs.

I doubt any headphones could do everything great, even costing 1K$.. They are great on trance, house, techno too. My girlfriend tested them (the Uptowns are her headphones) and she was like wooooohaaaaaa, she's more of a basshead than me and she didn't want to give them back

good music needs a good vid too:
