Received my FiiO E12 today, and have a question... when I'm outputting to the ELE DAC, what level should my Windows volume control be at?

Full volume. You should control the volume of your audio with the E12's volume pot as it is the last piece in your chain.

I've never heard the ES10 before, but I wonder how comparable the WS99 is to it?  ES10 was around $400 and that finish with all the scratches was a deal breaker.

So after some extended listening it looks like I'm going to need to replace the stock pads... from what I've gathered so far, it looks like the HM5 is popular in this thread, and I'm curious as to how much of an effect will it have on the sound?

If the shallow depth is a problem then you can always stuff something underneath the pads, I do that pretty often.

I suggest stuffing it with a gel typ material.

There is very little effect on the sound with the HM5 pads, I have a set, they are cushy and comfy, though I put the stock pads back on.

What brought you back to the stock pads, if you don't mind me asking 

 
I will say I've had them on for a good part of the day today, and I think I might be getting used to them.

I ordered the HM5 pads but haven't got them yet, so I stuffed mine with tissue.  I think they're fine now.

So I've finally bought the WS99 and completed my ATH trifecta! They sounded great out of the box but haven't had time to give them a critical listen due to finals ugh. How much do they improve from open-box until being well burned in? And also, are there any recommendations for a good amp and dac that would pair with both the AD900X and WS99? I'd prefer just to get one amp and dac for cost-saving purposes.

Got these last week, they're so good. They surprised me as ive been listening to a lot of shoegazing stuff without much base since wednesday and they still sound top.
