The Stax Thread III

Just received a NOS sealed in box 009. Initial impressions on my Kerry T2/Linn KDS Organik are quite positive compared to my 009S (of course X9000 rules).
Many forget the source is “rather” important no matter the amp or headphone
I'm stretching on my audio memory here (at multiple points), but I felt the Kerry/Nascent T2 voicing is at least somewhat similar to BHSE (but with performance enhanced). And on BHSE I found 009S vs. 009 to be kind of a wash - both generally a good match to the amp, not strongly preferring either version in particular. With KGSShv Carbon there was a very strong preference to 009S over 009. And with "OG" DIY T2 there was slight preference to 009 over 009S. I sold my 009S a while ago!

Yes, source is important. I really like Stax from a good vinyl source! Especially a T2 (either one).

Jusr simple curiosity: if the x9000 is superuor, why the 009?
Look at my profile - I like to collect Stax headphones😆

My first experience with Stax was at CANJAM NY when I was at Justin’s booth and listened to a 009/BHSE. I then started with the L300LE/353XBK and when it was time to move up to the “big leagues” the 009S had been just announced so I went straight there.
Call it nostalgia however I wanted to see if I could recreate the magic of my first demo.

Whether they stay in my stable will be determined.
Oh - I am also a sucker for finding NOS headphones still in a sealed box😆

PS - still trying to figure out why, when I joined headfi in 2003, I did not know about Stax. Back then it was only the Senn 650, Grado, and a bunch of diy builders (Tangent, Peoples, and Phil LaRocca anyone 😉?)

Yep, I came on board here when PiMETA was a big deal, HD600 & Cardas smurf cable was flavor of the month (not many flavors to choose from then - before even HD650!), and folks were waiting on their Headamp Gilmore V2 orders. The Headroom Blockhead was beyond-aspirational level gear. And I do remember fallout from Larry not delivering on LaRocco stuff.

FWIW my Soren Brix-built KGGG appears to be working perfectly and I have no issues with it...but I'm very new to estat, so what do I know?
I’ve owned two of his products and never had any issues. I’d give him my money again. Hands down.

Oh wow - now we are both dating ourselves.
I still have my LaRocco PPA somewhere inside a closet. I was one of the lucky ones - it was one of the last Larry made before all hell broke loose.
Where are all of those guys today - Phil, Tangent etc. I would be curious to know

I really liked the SR007 mk2 sound. BUT, the double rotating cups and the tensioned suspension strap setup was fkn horrible and annoying. Is there a similar Stax/Electrostat headphone to that, that uses a more conventional pad/cup/headband setup? Or a frankenstein SR007 mk2.

Is it the SRM-T1 ? Is that a good one?
Well it depends. It is basically an early version of the SRM 006t. If I remember correctly the +~300 volt swing is ok but I don’t forget that the ccs mod will increase that by 20%.
