The Stax Thread III

bought SRM-T1 + SR-007 used around 2008
never been impressed
sounds lifeless
what is a proper amp ?
I think in the preceding pages you will find talk about the different non-stax made amps. 007 are more difficult to drive, I find. I enjoy mine with the Carbon in particular.:)

Lots of variables, could be a lesser (SZ1?) sample, non-ideal fit on the head (one can easily affect the frequency response by changing the angle), etc.
If anything, the SRM-T1 has more "life" than solid-state amps, it is the flabbiness and clarity that seems to be the most easily detectable differences (to me anyway).

Is the 007 the sweet spot amp? I see it comes in a few revisions, rev 2 etc. Whats the pick?

the 007t is a great all-purpose amp. IMO a L300 + 007t combo is very hard to beat.

The newer generation silver faceplate 007t have fixed power voltage, so use step up/down transformer if necessary. It has more (unnecessary IMO) signal inputs. Amp circuit looks to be basically the same.

for some reason 007t auctions get bid up pretty high nowadays, I remembered they were more around $400~$500 on yahoo.jp auctions (then add $100 fees/shipping).

727 is also a great all-purpose chioce, but they don't show up as often.

The Novem are multiplying!
After a LOT of testing, on not only different headphones but different tubes, here are my conclusions about the elusive Mjolnir Novem self-biasing amp

1) Still imo best amp I've heard with the x9k. Strongly prefer over the BHSE, Carbon, Aristaeus or any of the stax offerings. This is proper summit-fi
2) DO NOT recommend with the 007mk1. Bass distortion above 85db and overall bad synergy.
3) Excellent match for new Lambda (l300/l500/l700)
4) Vintage Lambdas has decent results, but better off with carbon

Where you found this last novem?

Where you found this last novem?
Both 2nd hand on head-fi. Mjolnir produced 3, but not sure if that 3rd one is actually Birgir's personal. There is going to be another 5-unit batch with additional special edition upgrades from what I've heard.

Friend has the BHSE & x9k and wasn't 100% loving the combo. Once he heard my novem, we tracked down the other unit.
One unit had some adjustments to the (silver knob one). It has a 24-step, where the OG novem using a custom TKD volume control. The TKD has a little bit of a channel imbalance under 50db (which is normal), so the 24-step is perhaps an improvement but doesn’t allow as much play in higher volumes.

The top unit is using NOS Mullard Tubes as input and JJ goldpin ECC99 for output. This seems to have less power/gain, but is a bit more organic.
The bottom unit is using JJ ecc83 and jj silver ecc99. "harder' sound to it that works better on the lambda models. Either are sublime for x9k and neither work well for the 007 lol.

Yep, solder mask is not always green.
I don't see any copper traces exposed even where they would be if there was no solder mask.

Edit: Oh, and solder mask is primarily used to prevent oxidation of traces and to help prevent solder bridges. It does insulate, but is not a very durable insulator so I would not rely on it to be one.

In case you (or anyone else) might be interested, I've got my 007t up for sale:

That is a very nice 007t.

I'd suggest maybe put a "117V" label to cover the 100v marking since it is already configured to the 117v setting?
It's fully adjustable, 110v, 117v, 230v, simply by adjusting the jumper. No need to cover it, the arrow indicates where the voltage is set.

Hi folks,
I seem to have found a general/recent Stax thread here. My very simple question is can the vintage SRD6 energizer (plugged into an amplifier of course) power any of the modern Stax headphones(L300)? It is the 6 pin unit but it does power my 5 pin SR34 electret headset I've already discovered. I also have the SR5's. Thanks in advance!

L300 are very good phones, much better than the older series such as the 303 ( I have both; L300 wins hands down).

srd-6 is not good enough for the L300, even after solving the bias voltage problem. The little transformers inside are not the same as what is in a srd-7.
But, IMO the srd-7Pro is not resolving enough for the L300 either.

to realize the L300's potential I'd suggest pairing it with a 007t / 717 / 727.
