The Shenzhen Benjie BJ-T6 / AGPtek Rocker

So I had a look at the spec-sheet of the CS42L51 DAC on the T6 and it appears it supports only upto 24bit/96KHz... So is Benjie blatantly lying about the T6's capabilities? :p

Specs translated from Chinese are notoriously unreliable, just as are marketing materials.

That may be true, bu they are claiming native DSD256 playback, which is totally out of the question LOL

Let's start off with your unsupported claim that the manufacturer is lying. Please point out where they claim anything but the following, which I cut and paste from their product page found here - http://www.benjie-tx.com/MP3HiFiPlayer/224.html

Functions
5, Support DSD format, FLAC max. 24bit/192K bps
8, Lossless playback (APE,FLAC, WAV, ALAC...)

There are three integral elements in the device that can affect decoding and playback, two that are hardware -

The SoC: Ingenic X1000 w/32MB integrated LPDDR (http://www.ingenic.com/en/?product/id/9.html and ftp://ftp.ingenic.com/SOC/X1000/X1000_DS.pdf ) that claims an internal CODEC with the following specifications:

– 24 bits ADC and DAC(digital output)
– Sample rate supported: 8k, 11.025k, 12k, 16k, 22.05k, 24k, 32k, 44.1k, 48k, 88.2k, 96k, 176.4k, and 192k

And,

The Codec: Cirrus CS42L51_F2 (https://www.cirrus.com/en/pubs/proDatasheet/CS42L51_F2.pdf)

The CS42L51 is a 24-bit audio CODEC comprised of stereo analog-to-digital converters (ADC), and stereo digital-to-analog converters (DAC) designed using multi-bit delta-sigma techniques. The DAC operates at an oversampling ratio of 128Fs and the ADC operates at 64Fs, where Fs is equal to the system sample rate. The CODEC operates in one of four sample rate speed modes: Quarter, Half, Single and Double.

And one software -

The Hiby Player (http://www.hiby.cd/)

The app's published feature set includes:

1. All lossless audio formats decoding, including DSF, DFF, ISO, WAV, FLAC, AIFF, M4A, AAC, MP3, OGG
3. High precision decoding with 32 bit output, 64 bit float point and 128 bit internal calculating.
4. External USB DAC is supported with DXD/DoP output for Native DSD or 384KHZ 32 bit audio stream.

Following so far? The manufacturer claims/advertises 24bit/192Kbps and the three components are capable of delivering on that advertising.

But does it really?

If you go to http://www.2l.no/hires/ (Lindberg Lyd AS, Oslo, Norway,) you will find a great resource to test just how file compatible any DAP is.

Why don't you try these and let us know your results. And don't ignore the DSD256 files. The Britten: Frank Bridge Variations performed by Trondheimsolistene is particularly lovely.

I am not claiming anything, I'm merely speculating...

@PJABBER one more thing... Even if all those formats are supported, none of them mention DSD playback... This means DSD is getting converted to PCM before playback, meaning the DSD playback isn't really native, right? Once again, I'm merely speculating and don't know this for a fact...

AGPtek ROCKER 1.0 5 Beta Firmware Update 04/05/2017 (NOT current version, provided for reference info only)

3. Update: Keep playing after playing all songs once (Former version: When choose shuffle all songs, all songs will only play once and then stop playing.)
4. Update the languages of player for different countries
5. Hold the up arrow button to back to the main menu when it is in music playing interface
6. Update: the player can not be operated when the screen is off. (Former version: when the screen is off in the list interface, you can press the up/down arrow buttons to scroll up/down)
]
About point 6.
I've installed v. 1.1 which looks like the first FW coming before v. 1.0.5 for T6 but still the buttons UP and DOWN do not work when the screen is off. In Setting it shows v. 1.1 though after the FW update. Does anybody know the solution to this problem? How to make these buttons work with screen OFF?

It has been a while since I used this version but I think the 1.04Beta firmware had that capability. It is not the prettiest version and you lose other functionality but it might work for you.

Thanks for the link. Unfortunately this FW did not help to change tracks with the screen off. I cross checked the FW after downgrading and it is1.04Beta now. The most this FW can do is fastforwarding with Left and Right buttons. Up and down buttons do not work with the screen off. How can it be?

Long press to fast forward/reverse, short press to skip to next song, maybe?

All DAPs have idiosyncrasies that you can either live with or just buy another one that has a different "feature!":stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

A few weeks back I sent an email to AGPTek support and they responded pretty quickly. I was actually quite impressed.

support@agptek.com
I sent them a message yesterday but they ask about Amazon order number.

Can anybody share Amazon order number for T6 purchase? Another option for those who bought the player at Amazon to send them this message and post their answer here.
Here's the message to support@agptek.com.

"I bought Benjie T6 player and updated the player's firmware with Agptek firmware.
The latest AGPtek Version 1.2 does not allow to change tracks with the screen off.
I've downloaded v. 1.04Beta from your download site (which was supposed to enable the operation of the player with the screen off) but it did not help. I crosschecked the FW after downgrading and it shows that the player has v.1.04Beta now. The most this FW can do is fastforwarding with Left and Right buttons. Up and down buttons do not work with the screen off.
Could you please help me with this matter?"

Sorry if it seems weird to you but please try to help me solve this matter.

Hi Alex,
Well your first problem is that you told them you bought a Benjie, and not an AGPtek :) I'm sure that's why they're asking for an order number.

I would think it's reasonable for them to say "Well...if you need support for a Banjie, you need to ask Benjie and not us". My understanding is that Benjie is the original manufacturer of the hardware, and AGPtek resell that hardware with their own firmware.

Also, I assumed that when the screen goes off the device goes into a "lock mode" by design so that you don't press buttons by mistake. Other DAPs have an explicit "lock" function.

To get the device to respond again, just press the power button.

So I would think you are not describing a bug, but a feature :)
