The Sennheiser HD580 Impressions Thread

Looking for an hd580, is my only option eBay at this point?

I wouldn't mind eBay usually but I don't have the time to monitor an auction.

eBay bidding is a PITA. I've had 3 580s get sniped from me. The irony is that I would be willing to pay more than what the final bids end up being if there was a buy now option.

My quest for a 580 continues on.

I finally won an auction for the 580s on ebay but it took forever. It is tough waiting for an auction to end...

Sennheiser- as of last year- still carried parts for the HD580. I've owned them since they first came out; rebuilt them over a year ago. Still love the sound and always go back to them when I get burned out on newer models.
Just saw these posts and wanted to agree: imo they are still as great as ever- hope they last as long as I do!.

^^^am very interested in hearing your description of the sound quality difference between the 600s and the 580s you got.

The lady I bought it from hasnt shipped it yet so I probably wont get it until Wednesday.  If you read through this thread their are people saying that the different versions of the hd580s sound different.  The flat label are suppose to be better.  With having the HD600s, obviously I didnt need a 580 since they are suppose to be similar. So I was only looking for a flat name model which apparently were only the first and second generations produced (pre-1995).  They are obviously the oldest too, so they harder to find and often beat up pretty bad when you do find them.  Also, there is talk of the HD600s changing along the years too.  I have no clue when my 600 was made since I bought it used.  Maybe there are dates on the drivers but I never looked.  Anyways, I will post what differences I hear when I get them.  If you google there have been many comparisons.  Supposedly, the HD580 fell in between the HD600 and HD650 in treble and was about the same as the 600 in bass from what I remember.  Innerfidelity had graphs showing all three.  It should be easy to find.

580s were my very first introduction to the world of Sennheiser. I had almost no clue about sound fidelity and no clear concept of hi-end sound, but I had read great stuff about them and decided to order pair off eBay for 155 USD. I had them for about 2 or 3 years before I moved on to HD650 but I clearly remember them being awesome - a friend of mine kept telling me that they're the most distortion-free headphone he had ever heard.

I finally got me a nice pair of HD 580.  Typical bad foam but that is an easy fix.  Overall very nice shape.
I have been listening to them and comparing them to my HifiMan HE400i and other than a bit less bass I think they are edging out the HE400i.
I have a HD650 cable and new foam ear and headband coming.
Now all I need to do is find some 600/650 grills.  I called Sennheiser and they are out of stock.

The 580 when properly driven should edge out the 400i when it comes to resolution and plankton.

Don't through out your old grills right away. They play a part in the sound of the headphones. A new grill will be one step closer to making the 580 an old style 600. (Not necessarily a bad thing)
