Fan3. Next IEM from Penon. Has bone conduction and a switch that engages bone conduction. Its like taking a viagra pill. Bone on and bone off!.
Penons first inclusion of BC driver. Makes these quite interesting. Will post an impression of these soon.
Love the use of switch to enable the BC, on some IEMs you do start to wonder if it's working or not 😅

Do you know if they have used a BC like Unique Melody and CP622B that focuses mid-range?
Or like Kinera models that have it for the bass?

I’ve just received the Penon Voltage courtesy of @ian91 arranging a UK mini-tour of his own unit.

I’ll conduct and post a mini-review, including some comparisons with my own iem’s in the next week or so. :L3000:

100% some are, as you stated, fake. They are only used as an advertisement.

Definitely for the mids. It does affect the bass and a bit of treble too but mids especially.

DANG!. That hardware. Nothing says you're a serious sound geek like a thick arse 12 core ASOS+X attached to your IEMs.
Looks great. Looking forward to your impressions and a comparison with ASOS+ and Pyramid.

I thought I was done after Voltage (ha) but I’m back for this. I’m not usually a fan of switches but this is one switch I’m totally down for - I’ve long wondered just what some BC drivers are doing, or what I’m supposed to be hearing. Awaiting impressions eagerly.

Meantime I’m finally getting to know these siblings, GD849 and GS849. I say finally because I was circling them when they were released something like 6 years ago and they were too rich for my blood. So I’m glad Penon have rebooted them with a considerably lower price. They’re both solid, well made cables and each clearly different.

IMG_9222.jpeg

So far, I’ve been trying them primarily with the Voltage and Vortex. Preliminary impressions lean in favour of GD849 for its lush mids, especially vocals. Mids - particularly lower mids - get a rather nice resonance to them. Its treble won’t hurt anyone but still conveys enough air and imaging cues while remaining consistent with the darker, richer sound that the cable is going for. I can see why it’s always been described as bit of a specialist cable though.

I’ve yet to find a pairing for GS849. Objectively, I suppose it’s a more versatile cable but I feel like it tries to be a little of everything all at once while compromising a bit of everything, whereas GD849 has a more coherent, definite character to it.

At any rate, I’m glad to be able to own both now. If I’d sprung for one back then, I’d have had to choose between them and almost certainly would not have dared take the plunge with GD849 at its original price of $219.

Testing out the Voltage using the ASOS+X vs ASOS+ vs Pyramid

The idea of increasing the core count for an already exceptional IEM cable in the ASOS+ is a brilliant idea and I do believe our buddy @Bosk had a suggestion to Penon that spurred on this idea. ASOS+ you guys either own or have read about is brilliant in many ways and is one of the better SPC type cables in the industry for what it does.

Adding 4 extra cores. What does that do? Well if you guys have ever used a 4 cored cable of some type and you see the same manufacturer bring out an 8 core variant. That is essentially what the ASOS+X is but now we are dealing with even more material in a 12 core variant, on paper you would think would be too much material, heavy and unwieldly.

Well its now tipping the scales for weight, it is a heavier cable. Has to be Penons heaviest cable. This cable is more proper for headphones than IEMs if I am to be honest but. No denying what it does for sonics. We are getting a super ASOS+, specialized palladium plug n all. The hardware on these are down right perfect for the X model.

While being heavy, it is crazy how flexible and bendable it is. If you guys see that pic I posted it stays in a circular form and is arguably a stunner looking cable.
So what was good in the ASOS, ASOS+ is now Supersized in the X version. More of everything the ASOS+ does. A grander sound presentation from the ASOS+ which already enhances stage elements. This is the part that makes owning this cable worth it. The stage of the Voltage is now at a proper TOTL level using this cable.

Its stange enhancing level is similar to some of the best EA cables I have reviewed and that is a feat. The resolve of this cable is increased. Your IEMs will sound more spacious using this cable vs just about anything you have tried in the past. What was good on the ASOS+ is now great and that is no exaggeration. Basically if you read the ASOS+ reviews. Add 4 cores of the stuff on top of what you read about the ASOS+ and the price more than justifies what this new 12 core variant is doing for your IEM sound. Its heavy but more material of the good stuff is never a bad thing in my book. If you don't like big bulky heavy IEM cables. I would stay away but if you're like me and love you some substance in a cable than these will be for you. If you guys own any of the 849 cable variants. Those are no joke when it comes to bulkiness, but this pic will show you what type of bulk we are talking about.

Lol. That is the OCC849 underneath the ASOS+X.
DSC01927.JPGBig boy cable on the ISN H60. Which by the way makes them sound like the brother of the Voltage that it is. Amazing with the H60.

Vs the Pyramid.
Believe it or not it is the ASOS+X that gives out a slightly wider stage out of the two which I initially thought would be the case. However when it comes to the inner details, imaging and layering that is where I feel the Pyramid is a specialist and has the edge when it comes to the technical details of your sound. There is a wow factor when using the ASOS+X on IEMs as you will immediately notice the sound expansion.

I am thinking if there was a hybrid between the Pyramid and the ASOS+ here. Now that would be something special. As it is. These two cables are different in how the present sound. And it isn't like the ASOS+ is weak at the technicalities of your IEM presentation. Far from it, which is why the + and now the x version exists.

This is a case of Penon pricing things correctly. The Pyramid is a specialist in what it does as it dissects and brings an enhancement of contrast for your IEM sound that not too many IEM cables are capable of. The ASOS+X is about that sheer stage, grand presentation of sound that not too many IEM cables are capable of. I would say if you're a stage whore!. The ASOS+X might weigh heavy on your ears, but that stage is worth every penny Penon is asking for these. Now if your a sound separation and imaging guy. Love your dimensional sound. Thats what the Pyramid does best, oh and its stage enhancing ability is no joke either.

Thanks for the comprehensive impressions. It sounds Pyramid and X complement each other, which is rather interesting. I think I will have to buy both to air with VOLTAGE.

Recently got Penon's OCC849 for the H60, great paring.

Wanted to know if there's a big leap with the ASOS+X and if it worth it? Meaning is there that huge of a difference and is it worth.

Thanks and Best

There is always better. I would enjoy the H60 with the OCC849. It is an awesome cable. Once you move up in the scheme of things that's when you want to look into cables like the ASOS+X and Pyramid.

It makes more sense to save up that money for something like the Fan3 which will be around the corner.

Bufff! Things are getting pretty bad. The new ISN H60, the upcoming Penon FAN3...and I'm thinking of buying the TSMR X. What a mess! 🥴

How does the H60’s bass compare with that of other Penon IEMs? I see reviews and impressions placing it on the level of the 10th AE, which seems reasonable, but I often find myself wishing that the 10th’s DDs dug deeper into the sub bass. In terms of Penon 2DD bass, I would say the Voltage or even Quattro has a more satisfying bass response. Which would you say the H60’s bass DDs resembles most closely?
