The official "most OVERRATED headphones" thread
Apr 11, 2007 at 8:45 AM Post #227 of 666
Somebody should make a list of the headphones mentioned so far and cross-reference them with an extensive list of popular headphones so we find out which headphones people don't find overrated.

I'll throw in a vote for the CX300 as the most overrated headphone-related piece of junk I've ever owned.

Most overrated? That's easy for me, Sony SA5000. One of my few impulse buys. I tried to like them. Burned them in for over 500 hrs, tried SS, tried tubes, tried different sources. Most fatiguing sound out of headphone that I've owned. The only thing that I liked about them was the comfort. I ended up selling them and the only thing I regretted was buying them before more reviews came out.

well every headphone going is over rated apparently.... so lets get on with life and enjoy what we enjoy and worry less about what we dont and what others think, music is a personal experience as this thread shows seems every headphone going somebody see's it as over rated. over rated really is the wrong term, should really be which headphone were you dissapointed with.

That my 2 cents anyway

I couldn't agree more.

I'll eat my words... Awhile ago I went back to Hawthorn Stereo in Seattle for a 2nd listen. Here's how I graded their cans:

Grado
SR60 w/Comfys : C+/B-
SR60 w/Bowls : A
SR80 : A+ (my fav so far)
SR125 : A-
SR225 : A

Senn
HD25-SP : D
HD265 linear : D
HD465 : D
HD595 : B+
HD25-1 : B+

X 5,and I have heard five different models of sone's from 160 to 600 + USD,not impressed at all.Sounded very bland.

JS5, my roomate ordered them for me and im trying them right now, suppose to be some astronomical SQ quality gain over the K81, not the case, especially with the blue tack mod. PM me if anyone wants the SJ5.

Bose Triports, not worth $150 at all, the K26P sounded better at 1/5th the price.

Those Bose are crap, not worth 50 $ never lone 150 ! I agree with you about the K26P,great for the price !

Stick with the K81DJ's... the HD25-1's are not an improvement.

I have tried both, and owned the H25-1's and was not impressed, and they easily broke and Senn, were real azz's about fixing them.

Hi!

Beyerdynamic DT250 anyone? Haven't heard them, but I'm kinda in the same situation as Tomjonesrocks. I have K81DJ and although there's nothing seriously wrong with them (IMO), I catch myself looking other closed portable 'phones. I know I shouldn't but still... So how does Beyerdynamic DT250 compare to Sennheiser HD 25-1 and AKG K81DJ?

Thank You.

Those DT250's for the price, offer the best sealed sound I have yet come across, IMHO....

Something someone said to me the other day made me wonder how much of this has to do with our ears, the physical ones, not our minds, and the way they interact with what's pumped into them. The point being that we may all like something more similar, in our heads, once it pushes its way through the canals and all the meat that's in the way.

In the same vein, I wonder what would happen if we all sat in front of good speakers at the same time, and could talk about them in real time. Would we have as much to say?

Finally, a friend who gets serious audio credits for a various reasons told me when I started looking for phones to beware of any phones where people commented about the bass, either favorably OR unfavorably. His take was that if you noticed it too much in any respect, there was probably something wrong with it, and I think this may be true, as a good general comment, IMO. From what I've heard so far, bass rendering in headphones is much more all over the place than any other tonal aspect, and with so many bad (i.e., grossly unrealistic in various respects) choices being presented, it's inevitable that people would be forced make different choices and sacrifices.

Beyerdynamic 770/80 and 990(05). Overrated mostly because of the price to performance ratio. I really wanted to like the 990 so maybe I will give them another go when I build a new amp.
