Yes! All .flac or .alac files. I can certainly tell the difference between my Mac's audio card vs. my older PC's audio card.... the PC's headphone out jack is so awful that I can't listen to music on it... I don't know if the audio card in the Mid - 2011 iMac is genuinely quality or not, but definitely worlds above my PC.

Also, I know that the T1 has the MAP of $1295, but what price can they typically be found for with a call?

Just the ability to use your iMac's headphone jack as either an analog output (i.e., a true headphone port) or an optical digital output makes it a valuable audio tool. You're in pretty good shape whether you choose to use a standalone DAC right now or not. The Catch-22 you're in is that if you add a Bifrost now, the difference you'd hear on your DT990s would be noticeable, but probably not massive, since they're very good but not excellent cans. Likewise, going to the T1 with the rest of your current rig would also create a noticeable but not necessarily massive improvement.

Are you willing to go used for your T1? I just sold a pair for $750 shipped. That was a bit on the low side, since they had some scratches in the leather, but you do rather frequently see them for $850 or so used.

Got mine for 1,000 USD~ delievered to Australia so I'd think you'd be able to get them for 950~ easily shipped to CONUS.

Got a quote for $1,000 and considering pulling the trigger.... I know that no one can assign value for someone else, but did the T1 feel like $1,000 upgrade to you all when you purchased yours? Is it pretty much agreed that the bang for the buck winner of the two in my setup is the T1 and not a DAC?

I bit the bullet and completed my order a few minutes ago... I suppose I'll see for myself if they are worth it or not in about a week when they arrive. :S

Keep in mind that the T1's scale exceptionally well - meaning they may not completely blow your socks off with your current set up. BUT when you do upgrade from your Valhalla and/or throw in a DAC, your phones will be feeding you every ounce of goodness that your source-amp can provide.

This was the right way to upgrade. Incidentally, I had a Valhalla to listen to for about a week and the T1 sounded noticeably better out of the Valhalla than the 880's did. However the T1's will reveal things about your amp that you never noticed before.

haven't gotten my t1 back from repair yet, hopefully tomorrow or early next week. they did have to basically replace the whole headphone though (driver rattle + the bent up frame...)

Must've been a solid rear placement on the T1 when you sat on it.

Definitely, for me coming from a DT990/600. The T1 simply does everything better, a lot.
And it's by far the most comfortable headphone I've ever used.

+1

the T1 is way above the dt 990s performance. about the same bass but alot cleaner sounding, better mids with alot more detail, and smoother highs as well. the soundstage is a huge improvement as well, it just does everything better.
