Question for anyone who can answer...

I am considering getting the T1's because I want an upgrade from my HD600, which are excellent, but I am always looking for more detail in music.

Obviously I considered the HD800 since I'm a Senn fan, but even used prices for those cans are kind of ridiculous for a working man like myself at this point.

I have read that the T1 is comparable to the HD800, and they go for much cheaper on the head-fi sale forum, so that's why I am considering them.  BUT, I used to own a pair of DT880 (250 ohm) and really did not like them at all in terms of enjoyment... technically they were very good, but they felt dry and analytical, and borderline sterile.

In terms of... tonality, I guess is the word... are the T1's closer to the DT880s or the HD800?

DT880 and HD800 are very similar in terms of tonality

T1 v1 is warmer and more musical than DT880/HD800, but still a very detailed neutralish headphone (read. still drier than HD600)

You should also read about the AKG K712 as an alternative to the HD600, with bigger stage and more detailed presentation.
Maybe you could use the rest of the money upgrading your Amplifier.

Typical receivers have a really high output impedance and thus they tweak the sound of your headphones.
Even with your 300 Ohm Sennheisers, the amplifier might be boosting the mid-bass a few dB.

I haven't heard the DT880s but I have heard the HD800s to compare to the T1. I was able to listen to the T1 at length and found that is has a phenomenal bass response that is so quick and weighted appropriately unlike with the HD800s. The mids are pristine and the treble is detailed but less even than the HD800. I currently own the T1.2nd Gen only because of the ability to have it recabled into a balanced/XLR configuration. The T1s I had had the T1.2nd Gen baffle but upon comparison the drivers were indeed different. So I would definitely opt for the T1 if you get a chance as it is still better then it's updated version. The T1 can be had for a lot less dough over the HD800s too but still come close to its performance overall but best the HD800 in the bass region.

Yes, my Denon seems to be one of the few with a very good headphone out.  It was absolutely divine with the DT880s and the HD600... plenty of power, very big, full sound.  Sounded better than my old Schiit Magni 2.

Hmmm... T1's seem like they might be impossible to resist... they are very well priced on the forums and seem to be a pretty big upgrade from the HD600.  I really can't believe Sennheiser cans are always so ridiculously high, because I really want the HD800.

Go for them my man. I own the HD800 and T1, and I can easily say it was hard to pick a winner. The HD800 came on top ever so slightly, but for the price it's almost a no brainer to go for the T1's (I just sold a pair for $480, the price to performance is absurd!)

Yeah, seems hard to pass up for the price to performance ratio.  You can almost get them for what the HD650 sells for at full msrp.

So the T1 is close to the DT880 in sound signature?  Does that mean they're dry and analytical?  Because that was a major problem for me with the DT880.

I know the HD800 is on the analytical side, but I've demoed them and to me they were nowhere near as cold/sterile as the DT880.

You might call it cold and sterile - but again depends on what you've got it paired with (the rest of your chain).  I used it mostly with an NFB-12, and often with my LD MKIV.  I use the T1 mostly with the iDSD, sometimes with the LD.  The last thing I would call the T1 is dry or sterile. It depends where your personal preferences lie, they type of music you're listening to, and the rest of your chain.

It also depends much with what setup you are using bcz T1s are one of those headphones that brings the exact character out of your Dac n Amp setup as they are. Meaning different sounds with diff. setups compared to other Flagships.

Agree, the T1 and HD-800 really depend on what you have in your audio chain, more so than other headphones

I have the T1 original and have also heard the HD800 and HD800S. I prefer T1's sound signature. I paired it with a tube amp call Elise. With this setup it's musical and hardly what I would call dry and sterile. To say that I like the T1 is an understatement. I  love it. :)
