So in terms of value for money they're the same, but what about purely the sound quality? Grados blow them out of the water?

I have Grado's SR60...It depends on what you like to hear the Grado's are very clear sounding and the bass is there but lack the thump or snap the S400's have.
For me I enjoy the S400's much more then the grado's. I like the thump and snap the 400's have. and the 400's are also very clear!!!

Grados have better detail resolution in their mids and highs. And because they are open headphones, better soundstage.

Well, unfortunately these didn't work out for me.  I returned them to Amazon today.  I will say that I thought they sounded great for a $26 can.  Didn't have sub-bass that I like.  BUT, the real reason for returning them was the annoying pain that would develop on top of my head due to the firm padding on the band.  Guess I have a big, long head.  Anyway, I hopped on the V-Moda Crossfade LP Amazon Gold Box $75 deal today.  Hopefully, they will be an upgrade, albeit not as portable as I would have liked.

Which velour earpads fit the HA-S400? What other earpad options are there for the HAS400?

Velour pads will change the sound signature.....for better or worse would be in the ear of the beholder, I suppose.  I have velours for my HA-S500 but they sit in a little box with a bunch of other headphone pads, cables and other odds and ends  because I didn't like what they did.  To my ears, they added a  slight veil over the upper mids, and also softened the bass response a little bit.

I suppose you could compensate for it with the Rockbox EQ, and if I was going to use mine outdoors in the summer I might do just that, but at this point I only use mine in the A/C, and use my portables that have cloth pads outdoors instead.

i got convinced that i should  get a pair of those.
i looked for them on ebay, and i found sellers that ship from HK, south Koria and japan (those were the cheapest 3).

Just finally ordered a white pair (I've been using my MDRZX300s and definitely have been due for an upgrade). I had been a bit conflicted about getting the HA-S500s instead, since they're so popular to so many. But after reading feedback from both threads, I had to go with S400s for my sound preference.

You can't really go wrong with any of them cuz of the performance to price ratio. Both are amazing, not simply for their price but they are just great sounding PERIOD!!!
