The New HD 560S: Linear Acoustics at a Breakthrough Value

I just got in the HD560S an hour ago. Look forward to getting to know them. But based on what I perceived so far, I can understand why so many people are positive about them.

And it's going to be an especially fun week of headphone demoing for me because I also got in the X3 yesterday. :)

So I listened to the both of these headphones on my iPad with it connected to my iFi Hip DAC. I put on Beethoven symphony no. 6 for comparisons. I started with the 560S using the SPC cable from Surf Cables and did comparisons with the 6XX connected using the Blue Dragon cable. The 6XX with the Blue Dragon cable sounded duller in comparison, more closed in and it kinda was underwhelming. The 560s with the SPC cable on the other hand gave a rousing performance, with wider stage. I felt enveloped in sound and it was intoxicating. I didn’t want to stop listening. I switched back to the 6XX and confirmed what I was hearing. I then switched the Blue Dragon cable with a OFC cable I have by Pensato and the sound was better with the iFi Hip DAC from the 6XX, but it still didn’t beat the 560S with the SPC cable.

I then swapped both the cables from each headphone with the stock cables. The 560S still came out on top, with a wider and deeper stage than the 6XX. I also came away thinking as I a/b’d the 560S sounded slightly more detailed than the 6XX. The 560S has this quality of enveloping the listener in a wall of layered sound. I felt like was sitting/listening in the orchestra arrangement. Whereas the 6XX presents the sound with good separation, but the sound feels like it’s coming more from the cups. These are early impressions for sure, and the 560S should be undergunned, as my 6XX is totally burned in. But the 560S seems to have some magic in the way it can perform. I’m pretty shocked that it can function as a perfectly capable monitoring can, but also give the listener this musical/emotional performance that rouses the soul with excitement at the same time. This 560S is quite a set of cans. I don‘t know what else I can say. I think Sennheiser is going to sell a hell of a lot of these headphones. Going back to continue listening now :)

Good choice, (Beethoven's 6th racket).
Any particular recording you'd recommend?

How would you describe the difference?

in what ways do you find the 560s to be in another league?

I mean. In every way. Every single way.
Theres not a single thing that k371 does better.

Don't get me wrong... k371 are a good closed back (at this price) but they are closed back and not in the same league as 560s.
In fact i rank my headphones like this
1. 560s
2. 599
3. k371
4. Superlux (i mean 30$... :) )

Just to confirm, Tempotec Sonata HD Pro dongle will drive the HD560S to very loud volume. So if somebody wants a $40 DAC/amp to use with these with Windows or Android, it works great. There's also a version of the dongle with an iOS adapter for $60.

However it does auto sense them as low gain. To get the Sonata HD Pro to go into high gain, have the 3.5mm adapter that came with the headphones plugged into the Sonata HD Pro when you connect it to your device. Then plug the main headphone cable into the adapter a few seconds later.

Would going from a pair of HD599 to HD560S be a meaningful upgrade? Have now read mixed things.
Powered in balanced mode by a Fiio K3 in either case.
I have 599, accroding to Joshua Velour 560 review I've just watched it's basically very similar tuning 560 having much less bass. In fact Josh stated 560 have the least amount of bass compared to 58X, and even 6XX. At this point I assume 560 is a more neutral sidegrade rather than upgrade over 599.

Interested to hear your thoughts on the X3, especially against the 560s :)

It's a straight upgrade. Sorry :)
I've posted about this.
Over 599? Can you explain in what regards other than bass, which actually according to reviews is a downgrade. I'm liking my 599, but I fear 560 is not that much different to make a purchase. Probably more neutral, which can be better or worse depending on situation/preference one hp being more fun, the other more analytical.

I’ll admit I haven’t listened lately my 007, but I’d be very surprised if the 560 sounds like them.

I recall the 007 having a relatively intimate soundstage which is very different than I read the 560 being described. I’d wager that 560 sounding like the 007 is somewhat an artifact of the demo and its shortcomings.
Looking forward to your 560s vs 007 and see if you agree. I’ll get the 560s when they go on Black Friday sale. 🤩🤩🤩

I owned the 599 previously. The 560s is a pretty big upgrade sound wise. The 599 will sound muddy in comparison due to its fairly large mid bass hump. 560s is cleaner, more neutral and has better treble.
