Nope - has nothing to do with post counts, and is assigned by mods/admins.  I think it's pretty much either by request, or at least with prior approval.
 
My elevation to Contributor was "out of the blue" though - just appeared one day.  For that one I was quietly chuffed - like being recognised by your peers for contributions to the community.

And well deserved, some of the best reviews I've read on any audio gears to include national publications

 I appreciate and always look forward to your observations and ability to convey what you see, hear and feel about your subject. Great work and to coin the Fleetwood song "Don't Stop"

On mobile Contributor shows, but other "custom" titles don't, as well as other identifiers such as Headphone Supremus. I always thought Contributor was after a certain post count as well. Hmm...

 
I don't think so.  A lot of the posters with big post counts - who've been here for a while - have either custom titles or Contributor status, but there are people with far higher post counts than I have (I'm just babe in the woods as far as post counts go

) who don't seem to have either.
