An informal poll of headphones with the best midrange:

ATH-AD2000
Grado RS1
AKG K501
AKG K240(600oms) and other variants
DT 48 (variants)
EDIT: ESW9 & 10
Other (...)

The Midrange Champion Is? So far in the thread, it's seems to point to the R10. Thought it would be the akgs.

I'll have to vote for the K 240 for the sole reason that I own a pair of the DF variant and they sound amazing to me.

I have to say that it's not fair to bunch all the K 240 together, because from what I've read, they all sound quite different.

From everything I've heard so far:

headphones: ESW10JPN
IEM's: SE530

From all that I have heard, the Yamaha YH-1000 has by far the best midrange..most of the other vintage yamaha ortho headphones too have this strength.

Best midrange of any headphone I've ever owned or heard belongs to the R10's romantic, lush mids. Colored to be sure, but still the best.

The best I've heard would be, in no particular order:

Grado PS-1
Grado HP-1000
Grado RS-1 (true vintage with gold lettering, brown headband, and pink drivers)
Sennheiser HD800

No Denon model will ever win a contest regarding midrange.

D2000s mids are far too recessed to be the best out there. Maybe a markl modded Denon, but not stock for sure.

I'd say RS1i has the most involving midrange out there that I've heard, but it is not the most accurate. K240 and DT48 were both very accurate.

x2.

The JH13's mids are much better than that of the SE530 though.
I'm awaiting for the K1000 arriving to see how they do.

Lol I would never know. The turbines, IE8, D7000 all have recessed midrange. I almost forgot what normal sounds like since the ES7 midrange is somewhat forward. I guess the HD595 have the most neutral midrange I've heard... not that it is saying anything.

From what I've heard lately (with several different amps) the best Mids in a full size HD.Phone are the "Sennheiser HD800" and a real close 2nd are the "HiFiman HE-5" This is MO! I haven't heard the Stax in years, but I'm sure they're in the same ballpark......

Of the dynamics I've heard my vote goes for HD800, and in second place Qualia 010 and K1000. Although the R10 have a long standing reputation of great midrange, but I haven't heard them (along with a couple others anyways).
