The JVC HA-S500 thread.

I like bass but I don't think I'm a basshead or anything like that. I'll accept basshead headphones though!

The cans I am going to suggest have accentuated bass, but it isn't nearly as "bassy" as a set of fresh-out-of-the-box S500s.

They have a more forward / cleaner / clearer midrange and smoother / more accurate treble.  The bass goes just as deep (if not deeper) as the S500s, but isn't as tight.

My suggestion:  Creative Aurvana Live

i have my S500 a while and looking for a new toy;

i love the sound of S500, and now i want something can cover the ear;

ATH ES700, WS99 or M50?

Any circumaural headphone recommendations that have a similar sound to the ha-s500? :D preferably something below $100. Thanks! And of course, I'm still loving my ha-s500!

Hi there,

I'm trying to find in this huge thread a link to amazon/eBay where to buy the leather ATH pads that are compatible with the s500 and I understand open up more the soundstage in them but after reading countless posts I haven't found them yet...

Would anyone please repost the links here?

Thanks a lot!!!

Jpd.

Edit:

After browsing a few more pages I found these:
http://www.ebay.com/itm/Ear-Pads-Audio-Technica-ATH-SJ5-DJ-Style-Headphones-Black-/261120868931?_trksid=p2047675.m1850&_trkparms=aid%3D222002%26algo%3DSIC.FIT%26ao%3D1%26asc%3D11%26meid%3D3123184649684698189%26pid%3D100011%26prg%3D1005%26rk%3D1%26sd%3D251141456324%26

However, are these not circumaural? If so,i would rather keep them supra aural instead, so does that mean that my best choice are the akg-518dj's ones? Is there much difference in the sound? (I don't really like a very strong bass)

Received my HA -S500 today and first impressions are mostly negative. I don't like them at this point.

To date my collection consists of a KSC-75, CAL Classic and many SuperLux hps (681b, 681f, 662b, 668b), a SoundMagic IEM, Sony IEM, and UE 500 IEM. Edifier 840 (CAL clone).

First impressions out of the box:
Deep bass emphasis and muddied upper bass and lower mids. Sounds congested, not much sound-stage, recessed highs.
Bloated. Synthetic. Muffled. Pulls out bass detail, hum, grounding artifacts in my tube amp, etc.

I shall burn this in for many hours to see if they come around.

This is EXACTLY how I felt about them right out of the box.  I have the CALs as well, and they offer far better clarity and detail.

The burn-in process, as well as the headband stretching with use, will bring bass / midbass back under control.  Use an equalizer to touch up the rest.  I also highly suggest the cork mod.

After a day of burn-in the bass and lower-mid hump have lessened much but they are still there along with the 2-D cutout sound-stage, the close-in sound-stage, and the narrow presentation. It has most of the detail of a CAL! and far less than any of the SL cans. Nowhere close to the ultra-detail level of the SoundMagic E18.

Perhaps this is a good can for bassheads who like to listen to EDM and electronica only.

Affected greatly by SS or Valve amplification as it pulls the Tube Euphony when in a tube amp but the hump is far less pronounced than with a mobile phone or SS amp.

Possibly very source sensitive. Paired with the proper amp and impedance matching, it may sound very good.

It is very likely that my lower end gear and chain are being revealed.

More burn-in and comparisons to follow.

Those were the original suggested ATH pleathers, the WS55 pads are more comfy and I think produce better sound :wink:

I have both of those pads btw.

You can order them from ATH services:

My pair has just arrived having ordered them after read all the positive reviews on here! These are my first pair of proper cans so have very limited knowledge to compare them with. So far I love them but a bit confused about burn in. Is this absolutely necessary and if so do I use the music I most listen to or is there special burn in tracks people use?

Welcome to the Club!

Just put them on your head and enjoy the music you listen too, that is he best "Burn In" these headphones need.

Great thanks for advice! The whole idea of burn in is new to me so I had no idea how to go about it. Some people said it was really important and others didn't seem to worry about it. I'll leave them for the minute then.
