JVC HA-S680 is the more balanced (yet fun sounding) and more comfortable version of S400 and S500:

It's much better than ES700.
AD900X is equally good, but less suitable for Trance.

Thanks, but I not willing to buy from Ebay nor amazon.com , so S680 is out of the question.

Where would you buy S400 and S500 then? AFAIK, they are not available in stores outside of Japan.

Hi guys, I need a bassy headphone to listen to rap and R&B mainly. I want a deep, powerful and predominant bass but also I want the mids and highs to be there. I was saving money and reading a lot of reviews from fellow headfiers and my budget was from 100 to 160€ ($135 to $217).
I made a list with the most mentioned and better reviewed bassy headphones in that price range that are closed (ultrasone's hfi 580, V-Moda's LP2 or even m-100, ATH WS77, M-audio Q40....) and I was trying to decide wich one fits me better when I discovered this thread and... well, now Im lost lol.
Of course I want to spend less money without sacrificing quality of the sound but you all say that this is one hell of a headphone and a bargain for bass-driven music so I have a couple questions:

- are the s680 better than the s500 for bass-driven music (rap & R&B)
- Do you consider these prices a good ones? -> JVC HA-S500 for 39€ (thats 53$) straight from Japan with free international shipping (Im from Spain btw) or the JVC HA-S680 for 59€ (81$)??
- If I finally buy the s680...are they worth of paying those 20 extra euros for them?
- In spain we only have the HA-SR500-B-E and I think those are not the same as the S500's, correct me if im wrong. They look different and I dont want to take unnecessary risks lol

Thanks for this thread and all the great info you guys give for free =) !!

PD: do both of them isolate well?

SR500 are not as good as S500.
S680 isolate fairly well, can isolate even better if you block the "dynamic ports".
The comfort advantage alone is worth the extra 20 euro
If you'll buy S680 from http://www.fromjapan.co.jp you can save at least another 5-10 euro.

Hi guys, I just bought these pair of phones and i like them a lot but I still miss my Ultrasone HFI-2400 pair.

First of all, I like the bass and I noticed they can be modded a LOT but i want to mod these to have better mids and highs .
I taped the 3 ports on each can and they have better bass.

I'm not a basshead so maybe I will take the tapes out because the bass is very punchy , please some advices.

Also I saw someone introduced cork on the cans and the highs and mids were better so can someone confirm this??

BTW, I'm using stock pads and I'm open to advice for new pads.

Thanks a lot guys.

Any circumaural headphone recommendations that have a similar sound to the ha-s500? :D preferably something below $100. Thanks! And of course, I'm still loving my ha-s500!

How much of a basshead do you consider yourself?
