The JVC FX850..Woodie perfection?. (A review)

Hey Hiflight, I remember you having a great review of the RE600 when they came out. Would you consider the FX850 an upgrade to the RE600? Are they even similar sounding r two different beasts? Thanks!

I did very much like the RE600 but IMO, the FX850 has a much greater sense of scale and reveals more treble detail than does the 600. The FX850 soundstage is more expansive and overall,I feel that the sound just sounds more lifelike and realistic and less like an IEM than the 600.

I will say that if one has small ear canals, the RE600 may be an easier fit and offer more isolation.

Afternoon all,

Slightly off topic, but I'm flying to Japan on Saturday and I'm looking to pick up a pair of FX850's (and also maybe the FX750's to compare them!). Does anyone know of any good shops in Tokyo for IEM's? Or would I be better off just buying them for amazon.jp and getting them sent to my hotel?

I'm not sure if I get the VAT off if I buy them in a highstreet store...

Many thanks!

And do please leave a review of it, my triple fi 10s just aren't suiting me anymore,
And I've got an itch for an upgrade, but the fx 850 is nearly $150 more. So if the fx750 is still better, I'm willing to settle.

yum! Anything you feel the Re600 is better at?

If one prefers less detail in the highs, the RE600 would likely be the better choice. I think the RE600 is less revealing of lower bitrate MP3 files than is the FX850. With .wav, high quality .flac or dsd files, the 850 will walk all over the RE600.

^^^........ anyone seen my wallet lately?

Some say the FX850 have a bit too much bass, do they have more bass than the RE600?
Are they a better match with the Tera than RE600 (I didn't really like this pairing too much).

Thanks for your prompt replies Hiflight, much appreciated

I feel that the FX850 has more bass impact and sub-bass than the RE600. It is an excellent pairing with my Tera. They seem made for each other despite the relatively low impedance of the 850.

I would second that: the FX850 and Tera are a very good match. The slight roll off in the bass on the Tera matches up well with the abundant bass on the FX850's. And the JVC's transparency really lets the organic goodness of the Tera  shine through. And the Tera has plenty of power to drive the JVC's.

I think the isolation is average and not too bad when I use Hifiman double flanges that isolate well to the ear canal. Stock tips don't isolate well for me.

I've been using the FX850 in transit everyday to work. I think the isolation is excellent (especially if you wear it over ear). Shuts out the exterior noise for my ears without cranking it up too loud.

Yes and yes. I watch where I have them out at. It's all good. People do gawk at them.
