The iBasso DX50 Thread - Latest firmware: 1.9.5 - June 30, 2016

I use Rockbox, but the DX50's weakest quality is its bass. The best firmware for bass and sound IMO is Sound Unlocked experimental. Personally, I wouldn't use it because it is buggy. The 2nd best option is doc2008's firmware.

For overall use and sound I would use Rockbox.

ah cool. where would SU 1.3.3/1.5.1 sit within that ranking for bass and general sound/usability?

Also, on avergae it seems that if you are using an external amp 1.3.3 is typically the better choice. And if not then DOCs firmware is better. That seems to be the general opinion, but your results may vary.

You can find the link to DX50_TRUE_SOUND_V2_BY_DOC2008 here in post number 4587

On page 1 of this site you can find links to a lot of firmwares by DOC2008 I went through quite a few before settling on the True Sound V2.

cheers guys! i'll check out SU 1.3.3 and DOC's (probably avoid the experimental SU for now). although, it's quite possible that I may find I miss RockBox and end up with that on the DX50 too, after using it for many years on my clip zip.

cheers.

With SU - don`t forget to access hidden bootup menu and change settings accordingly ;)

I see that true sound v2 was suggested. Make sure you give his newest firmware a try as well. It is my personal favorite.

I second this. Completely forgot to mention it!

I just noticed this last night and was wondering if anyone else noticed it.  The DX-50's sound quality from the headphone out is dramatically different than that of the line out.  It is significantly brighter sounding.  I have no EQ or other processing set up.  This is heard when comparing the headphone sound to the line out either through multiple amps or with the headphones plugged directly into the line out plug.

jnorris, that`s nothing new. Basically it`s because HO and LO have different capacitors, Nichicon FW for LO and Jovial (overly hyped but poor SQ) for HO. Of course with HO there are opamps too that change sound signature and quality tinybit.
If You wish HO and LO to have very similar SQ, then You must change some capacitors.

The question is - which one is accurate?  Is the HO enhancing the highs or is the LO attenuating them?  Since the LO is intended to feed a potentially high quality preamp/amp, wouldn't you want the best quality there?

Define what do You mean by "accurate"? Idk why do You think HO is enhancing highs but if anything those Jovial caps are "muffling" and reducing SQ.
LO with FW capacitors, imho, is not attenuating them also, it is rather balanced and "accurate", opposite to Jovial - "revealing" correct highs. Nichicon FW series capacitors are well regarded and should have great SQ (as I`ve also concluded with my capacitor testing @ DX50).
But in Your case there seems to be some kind of quality problem, maybe even with some other components? How old is Your player and have You been using mostly only one output, LO or HO?

My line out is loose... Since I use an external amp on a regular basis I need to get it repaired. I have read that iBasso will do it, but then I will be without a DAP :( I guess I could use my phone in the mean time :/

LO/HO socket repair is quite easy fix @ DX50. If You have soldered before, then it shouldn`t be problem

Where does one source the 3.5mm replacement?

The socket doesn't go bad, the connection to the pads on the PCB can break the solder connection. It just needs to be resoldered.
