Does anyone have experience with these drivers (or the original Onkyo headphones)?

Tyll has good things to say about the headphones, so I was thinking about giving the drivers a shot.

@GREQ mentioned them on the previous page. He might have the original headphone?

Aye.
Very capable drivers IMO.
The smaller shells and pads of the Onkyo seem to 'choke' the potential of the drivers. I think they have the potential to sound better in another headphone.

Overall I thought the Onkyos were OK, but the pads were too small, even for my ears.
Bass dominates the sound, and I don't remember those peaks at 3 and 6kHz being an issue.
Overall it's smooth with just about enough detail.

As usual, don't trust the dip at 4kHz - that's a common miniDSP EARS artefact.
This graph uses HPN compensation which is the most common type of compensation that can be used to vaguely compare with Tyll's measurements.

Those are so cheap, especially on Ali sales... i say go for it. The baffles alone are worth it.

That’s what I was thinking. You got the drivers, and also a free set of baffles!

@iFi audio Bros, do you ever actually participate in this thread or are you just always here farming posts?

anyways, here's the inside of a dead yamaha driver. Lots of grossness got inside over the years...

I’m a little confused what the metal disc is for. Could you please explain the function?

The metal disc around the outside is essentially a terminal. So as a regular speaker has a hot and common, an orthodynamic driver has the same... The brass pin in the center connects both poles, with the thin traces acting as the voice coil.

Missed opportunity to ask "What is your plan with all these posts you've farmed?" :D
Just block them and move on. They've added no value to the thread since day 1.

Ah, I see. Very cool! I have only ever seen orthodynamic drivers in photos; never in person. And of the pictures I’ve seen online, I’ve only ever seen it from the front. So it’s really cool to see the disassembled tech, to understand more how it works.

Thanks for taking the time to share the pics, as well as answer my question :)

Well, just happened to be modding my Pioneer SE-L40 today, and had this pic already when I caught a glimpse of this thread.
