Well, they're two different things. The X3 is meant to be a multi-purpose device with the the ability to bypass the internal stuff and improve upon it. The A series DAPs are mainly do-everything-that-doesn't-need-wifi-or-Android devices. They're not exactly marketed to non-audiophiles (if they were, they would have wifi and Android without audio tweaks), but they aren't as versatile. It's impossible to gauge which one sounds better, but the main reason I'd take the X3 over the Sony is that it has an expansion slot, whereas I'd need to buy the 64GB Sony (WHICH APPARENTLY ISN'T GOING TO BE SOLD IN THE US?!) to be content.

hmmm...after reading your comment,it make me thinking~ is X3 + those amp / dac / watever really sound a lot better than sony DAP ? cost wise, it is not so efficient for the X3 + all the extra equipment because every brands need to gain profit (which is the main point they sell things) and the shipping cost from the manufacturer to your doorsteps while SONY a860 although it is not very cheap *which we all know it's gonna be* it still hv the advantage like secondhand value , the bundle IEM that comes as a package and the UI which is still as excellent as before *Love the equaliser on my walkman cuz i hv no$$ for recabling!*

afterall, we, the buyers want a DAP that is easy to carry which offers good sound quality. No point for buying a portable device that is only portable when all the stuff have to be carried in a small bag or the package hav to be the size of a brick *sorry HM801&C4 users ,i meant no harm *......i really wish that FEIAO can release a working prototype before september which is the release date of SONY new "Audiophile" series DAP for review ~~we all know how big the influence of discussions in forum that lead to the selling of a particular products e.g: Fischer Audio FA-003 when it was just reviewed by LFF, people are crazy over it but now it cools down.

PS: im a chinese from MALAYSIA BTW, you know...malaysia made sony walkman so we have no problem getting any dap in the series XD I LOVE MY COUNTRY !!

I don't think you intended it but your 003 remarks makes it look like a hyped product by LFF.  It is absolutely one of the best headphones you can buy at the price.  Any claim otherwise or insinuation you might be making is completely wrong.  I would edit that last bit out if I were you unless you really have something on your mind you want to get out.

I also don't get the comparison of the X3 to this new Sony DAP.  Looks like apples and oranges.  X3 is for people that want 24/192 playback w/ LO and digital coax ability as a source/transport.  Thus it's about being most true to source in a nicely priced package.  The Sony has every damned useless gizmo under the sun to fix whatever is wrong w/ you music or phones with all sorts of 'enhancements'.  The natural competitor is the Cowon J3 not the Fiio X3.

That's like wondering if you should by a sports car or truck but you won't be able to decide until the new models come out.  Come on.

hi there...FA003 is not a hype product...i'm using one RIGHT now and it is really nice i love it~ i agree to LFF review too
that is just an example, cool down, cowboy~

that is just my opinion on walkman and x3...i don't care walkman or x3..is sony really useless? u hav to see wht audiophiles in china have to say..LOL

my main point is only to urge feiao to realease a prototype for clieos to review...not to create negative image for LFF or comparing a truck with a sport car...Hope you can really understand, if any words that i typed stepped on your tail...i present my sincerely apology =)

No worries.  It's obviously a language thing.  Some of the wording could be read the wrong way.  For example, there's a difference between a Sony DAP being useless rather than having useless features.  Assuming the unit works.

Feiao, where is the review sample of X3?Is the end of the mount and we want to learn more about your DAP.
Thanks

agreed..it's time already~ it is supposed to release on september,so there shall be at least a working sample of X3 ...in my opinion, software can be updated through internet so if X3 is release with a crappy software on board i will still buy it since we all know that feiao is (maybe)the only designer that will listen to our opinion when designing a product~~if anything wrong about the software part we just gv feedbacks and i hv faith feiao is gonna review the problem and try his best to solve for us

any news from Clieos by the way??

I don't have any news to offer. A somewhat working prototype / engineering sample had already been showed at the Hong Kong electronic show early of the year. But until the supplier to give them the final firmware, I doubt FiiO can do much about it.

Is the situation with the firmware still the same as before?  That is, at a complete standstill until the company they contracted can allocate more resources to it?

I don't have the most current update, but I do know some insight about the delay. The SoC supplier also does work for some major Western brands, which order are probably magnitude above FiiO and thus get their priority.Unfortunately until the supplier can finish up those projects, FiiO will just have to wait - and the best quote they get from the supplier is August. James is just as frustrated as we are waiting for the supplier. There is also a short supply of skilled worker and parts in China now, so delay is fairly common for most manufacturers, even on a good day. The uncertainty is so high that FiiO is now moving ahead with some of the amp / DAC projects they have planned for a later time because those project can all be done in house. But rest assured that the X3 will get done. FiiO already invested too much into the project and can't afford to let it becomes a vapourware.

See above.

James is extremely busy these days, so he can't come to the forum as much as he like.

I mean, collecting DAP:s and headphones is cheaper than collecting cars or motorcycles...

You were rationalising collecting DAP's by comparing it to cars and motorcycles, as to put forward that relatively speaking DAP's are cheap collectors item. My point was that just because you can list expensive hobbies it doesn't justify collecting DAP's and headphones. I exaggerated your same logic, by listing three relatively inexpensive items as to drive home how flawed your reasoning was.

Although I assumed my point was painfully obvious, it seems to you didn't quite pick up on it. I'm not here to start a flame war. It just tilts me when people use flawed logic to justify clearly illogical points.

Take it easy, newbie.

I did see what you were pointing at. My point is that if you spend some time at Head Fi, you will see that there are a lot of people who buy a lot of DAP:s, and especially, headphones. A certain measure addiction comes with the hobby. You might start to notice that when you have spent more time here and tried different stuff out.
An my post had a certain amount of irony, which can be difficult to make out online...

If you want to argue using logical arguments, I suggest you head over to the Sound science section. The other sections are more hedonistic...

... idontevenunderstandwhatyourtryingtosay

but is more expensive than collecting stamps, beer bottles, casino chips, and tea coasters. What's your point?

Not everything has to have 'a point'. Things on head-fi sometimes have meaningless qualities behind them (e.g. humour. wit, etc). There's certainly nothing wrong with it though.

"My point was that just because you can list expensive hobbies it doesn't justify collecting DAP's and headphones"

I'm assuming that you DIDN'T get the obvious nature of his statement.
You should have gotten from the fact that he stated something so obvious , that he was trying to joke around a bit with his banter.

I mean, come on.

I like Fiio's products and if it is relatively cheap and sounds good, then why not? I mean, collecting DAP:s and headphones is cheaper than collecting cars or motorcycles...

How could you not grasp the nature of this statement?

You thought that your own point was so **** obvious, but assumed that Danneq didn't understand what he had said? Even if he hadn't intended for such an effect - it by no means grants you any ground to pick on it and blow it up into a possible flame war (mb2lte). This is HEAD FI not a grammar Nazi school.
