The Entry Level Stax Thread

hehe. I'm listening to a song with pounding bass on my SR-30 this very moment. Saying goodbye...shipping it to a new owner soon.

Does your SR-30 distort badly at high volume or when there is heavy bass in the music? Sometimes I had to reduce the bass, the volume, or both to avoid distortion, depending on the song.

P.S. If you ever want to sell your STAX or other stuff in the future, PM me! I might be interested.

I don't remember if it distorts at high volume. It's been a while since i listened to it. I'll hook it up some day soon maybe.

Hi,
I have the opportunity to buy a used (mint condition) SRS-3000  (SRM-300+SR-202)
for about the same price as a brand new SRS-2170.

Can you tell me what would be your choice ? and why ?
I own a babystax and a HD650 (w/equinox).

I'd go for the out of production system. I know at least one person who likes the SR-202 more than the SR-207. The SRM-300 has more output voltage than the SRM-252S. And if it's the same price as a brand new SRS-2170 imported from Japan (under $500), that's a good deal.

I'd say go for it.  I got SRS-3000 and absolutely love it.  It's nice that the SRM-300 also functions as a stand for the Stax.  For reference, I paid $450 for mine (dust cover included).

OMG!!! Your avatar is from EarthBound! :two_hearts:

EarthBound is my second favorite video game. (Final Fantasy VII is #1.)

...And I just realized: I never listened to any of the EarthBound/Mother music when I owned STAX.

I was surprised that no one seemed to be interested in my STAX SR-30 when I listed it for sale/trade. Maybe it's because not many people know much about it...

A couple of years ago I sold a 30 year old pair of Signet TK-30 electrets for $75.
How much were you asking for the SR-30?

How would SRS-2170 compare to hifiman HE-400i, since I can get them for about the same price?

I owned both and strongly prefer the SR-207. Its transparency and realism are on another level, at least to my ears. The HE400i is more smooth and slightly warm. Mine had the grill mod, so it sounded better than stock. Both are great headphones.

Nice, I had the same question ^^ Since I got to audition the SR-207 but not the HE-400i

But as always it's "at least to my ears".

Hi all, let's assume I buy a Stax 2170 when I am in Japan, will I be able to use it in Europe even if it 100 V rated? Or do I need to use a step up transformer (100 -> 220)? Thanks guys!

You'll need a either a transformer or a new wall wart power supply in your local voltage. Spritzer has some for the 2170 system in stock on his website. You don't need to rewire anything like in the big amps. Alternatively, you can get a wall wart of the proper output DC current and voltage in your local main voltage and rewire the jack to fit the flipped STAX wiring. That would probably be the cheapest option.

Sorry , missed the part that this one uses an external DC power supply.
Just be cautious, STAX drivers easily picks up noise from wall warts or low quality power supplies!
Cheap regulated wall warts might lead to very audible hum in the sound you get in your ear speakers.
I assume spritzer has his wall warts tested , so maybe  this is the best solution if dede4metal can not test them before purchase ?

Considering the tested Spritzer universal ones are $35 and a decent 12v 1A wall wart is about $20, I'd probably just grab the guaranteed one for $35.

Though if it was really me, I have a couple wall warts that meet the specs laying around for model projects anyway so I'd probably take my chances.
