The Entry Level Stax Thread

There was something wrong with my amping. I imported a SRS3100 set and oh boy, the SR-L700 sounds sweet with the SRM252S already. Sounds like I finally have come home. All the treble I want, amazing transparency and detail, hyperreal soundstage and instrument separation. It´s like every instrument has its own loudspeaker. WOW.

Will scout the usual places for a (used) amplifier, or maybe DIY a KGSSHV Carbon myself and the SRS3100 goes to my office,

Found my endgame, finally!

For the person complaining about the Koss´ low end: The Vesper Hybrid Pads amplify both treble and low end. The Koss sounds very neutral now with amazing bass for an electrostatic HP. The vesper pads are a must buy imho.

How does the Stax L3100 set sound compared to the Audio Technica AD2000x?
Do they excel at different types of music?

I have the AD1000x, not the AD2000x, and I'll say that if I had to live with only the 1000x, I would not be too dissatisfied. It's a great dynamic can. However, I would severely miss the speed, dynamic range, resolution and transparency of my L300. The 1000x is a bit warmer. I'd say, if you decrease the treble of the L300 by an average of 2 db, you'd get the same approximate neutral response as the 1000x. The slight bass/low-mid hump that all dynamics have give the 1000x slightly more impact when it comes to bassy percussive instruments. The 1000x's treble just doesn't sound as clean and crisp as the L300's. L300's treble is super super SUPER fast. You can hear things like static shocks as the way they would sound in real life, snappy and cracking. 1000x is more forward sounding. Everything, especially the midrange, is more in your face and condensed. It sounds more intimate in that regard. Subbass goes to the 1000x easily...it's a dynamic can afterall.

Overall, the L300 is much more detailed and transparent, with more precise imaging, and leaner sounding. The AD1000X sounds similar to the HD600 but more forward, and with better bass extension.

Greetings from Spain!!!
:)
Recently I am using a "new" Stax system, SR-207 plus SRM-252S. Very transparent and open sound with great scene but nothing to do with a BHSE plus SR-009 system, of course. Personally, I like my main system based on the Audeze LCD-4 (another magic world, of course), but I am very happy to have a Stax set in my life. I have it on "breaking period" until it is taken by a great friend.
Please: Is there a power supply that improves the SRM-252S?

Thanks in advance.
C.K.

After half of a year, I finally goot the Sr-202
The pads condition is bad!
The headband makes some cracking noises when I breath or move a bit...

Need to fix the headband problem, and maybe find some other pads or try to make them softer.

I accidently bought the 507 from the ebay, the feels cheaper! (For 58eur a year ago)

Wow! today I cant find any cheap pads for stax headphones.
1 year ago I tryied to compare 507 vs 234 (202 black 303 gray 404 brown? ) pads

The two units have different sound. The srm1 was a bit laid back. It paired better with sr-404s.
The sr202 was better with the srm-313. I sold both of them and my 404s.
The 202s remain here. I use them with the srd-7 and a vintage Sansui au717
The dynamics with a transformer box are very good. I also have akg q701s paired with a asl mghead
I use my speaker set up now quite a bit. So headphones aren't main go to anymore.
I got my sr-202 headphones and like how they sound on srm-1 :frowning2:
only old lambda pro sounds good with it.
not have any other units to test.

My 202's has a little twist in the forks holding the earcups and causes them to make noise
when moving around. I've been tempted to buy a new headband, or at least new forks.

Greetings from Spain...

@legopart : Can cracking noises come out of transducers? My SR-207 make some "fart noises", If I don't move much: nothing strange sounds, just good, very good music.
Congratulations on the purchase anyway.

C.K.

This not the deal here,
I put some oil on headphones joints
even too lazy for it, just removed the headband and the caps and spray it with WD (ant clean it).
it fixed the scrachie noise when the head moves.

still not like the 507 pads, the original one is too dry to use

sr202 is less deep then the lamda pro one, and even sr-80 (I have the sr-30)

First I got it with unglued drivers that falled inside and reglue them in place, while misstakely touch the back membrane.
and them short this electric element on the back (?10pF capacitor ?) on the bias solder connector

Can some one compare sr-700/sr-300_limited with sr-202 or sr-lambda_pro
Some one offering this pair used for $570 and I out of money this moment :frowning2:
(and $340 for sr-407)

and how can I make the sr-202 pad soft again?

I still not like the sr-202, it sound lifeless!, I have only the srm-1 to test it

Discovered something dissapoiting about the structure that after the first releasing Stax, that seperate the top models from low models.
after all the price for new is incredible high!, more then $500 or even #1500 and more, not incluading the amp
The first design of the headband with metal Cap handle part for Lambda normal/pro with good quality pads and little bit mineral wool inside the caps.
the straps and the pads on gamma/sigma/lamda/omega1 are very good nice soft and quality!

after that they released the sr202, sr303, sr404 and looked like sr-207, sr-307, sr-307 and even sr-l300 and sr-l300-limited edition
the headband is cheap plastic with cheap plastici holders
stax_sr002_1.jpg

the strap only improved it quality on the top models.
the pads almoust the same, changed design on sr-l300 and the sr-l300 limited and even sr-l500
heard that sr-404 have some better cable (not sure)

comback to headband quality on the toop models, that still looks plastici
stax sr-507 and sr-l500, sr-l700, and eve sr-009
some improved a little bit headband from the previsus models,
stax_SR_507_large__81709.1377479104.1280.1280.jpg

the pads changed from sr-507 and the previus
the pads changed from sr-l500 and sr-l700 from the previus

sr-009

backward sr-009 used metal headband like this

*not comparing the cable quality.

looked on Stax repair parts and understood it:

I'm intrigued but absolutely ignorant about Stax... how does one connect a A&K SP1000 with the Amplifier e.g. included in the set Stax SRS-3100?
The Sp1k has 3.5mm SE and 2.5mm balanced output. Would that work and/or is it advisable?
