The DT990/600 impressed me

i think i will consider the 990 because the good bass response than the other..but the recessed mid makes me uncertain..is the mids really that bad? what type of amp that can make the mid more pronounced then? somethings can make it sound more heavier n pronounced but warmer ?

None of my amps (SS or tube) on their own changed the perception of recessed mids with my DT990/600s. Judicious use of EQ, however, did the trick.

I've been wary of recessed mids before and sold my AKG K81's and SRH-840 because of it. So far it doesn't really bother me with the DT990. I even still have the AD2134 OPA in my FUN which I used to get some warmth out of the AD900. If I wanted to lessen that recession I could always pop in the earth opamp.

It's only been one day however, as Olias sure knows.

You almost made me pump over a watt into those poor AD900s :p I think that the DT990 does not muddy up the mids, which is what really bothers me. It's a pure volume recess because the mids are VERY good.

Taking the recess problem face on, it's a very subtle affair. While the DT990 would be slightly recessed, AD900 are slightly forward. DT990 are tricky because the mid-to-high ratio is fairly neutral unlike say a Denon or Ultrasone. It's only the bass-to-mid ratio that is off.

Listening to vocals is a pleasure on these. They don't jump out harshly at you like the AD900 tends to do but they still have a decent edge to them.

This is exactly how I felt about the DT990s. If I hadn't decided to make the jump to T1s, I would surely have kept the 990s, as the "problem" with the mids falls sqaurely in obsessive-compulsive listening territory.

agreed.  the recessed mids is very, very slight.  and is a pure volume thing.  to my ears, the bass never steps on them at all.  my only other nit i could pick with these phones is that the treble becomes a bit much at super loud volumes.  but do i ever listen that loud?  no.
they're really great cans.

I figured you'd be in Japan if there was a W1000X to sample. Not very common outside, it's easy to get one here but near impossible to find a store that'll let me try. How does that compare to the DT990? I know I'm asking a lot of questions, but I'm not lucky enough to fly to Japan anytime soon.

Sorry for not getting back sooner but I've been a-travellin' near and far.
Quickly though the W1000x sounds ... dryer?
A little like the impression you get when listening 16bit 44khz audio after listening to 24bit 96khz. But not quite as dramatic.
But I definitely prefer the DT990s with a proper amp.
Anyway I've got some K702s and a HP4 in the mail so I'll post a comparison between the HD595s, AD900s, ESW9, W1000x, DT990 and K702 sometime soon (June).

I have the same impression and this is the main concern for me with DT990.

I haven't heard the DT880, but I can tell you right now that if you want nice forward mids, don't get the DT990. The mids are definitely recessed. Most vocals seem to be behind all the instruments, at least in pop/rock stuff that I listen to. Couldn't say for any heavier genres.
