The DT990/600 impressed me

the 600 ohm versions of both would exaggerate sibilance less. So if you like the DT880, the 880/600 might be just the ticket.

Thanks, Skylab.

I guess the ~$70 higher cost for DT880 at B&H will just justify me from sharing the music too loud in the room, or less outside sound coming in.

Is there any other "significant" difference that has not been mentioned in this thread between the 880 and 990?

I'm close to getting the 990's, but am worried about the "recessed mids". But I'd rather have the 990 bass over the 880's and I already do have a mid centric phone that is too light in the bass (Grado 225i's) so...

I'm assuming my Head Direct EF-1 amp should be able to drive the 990's well, right?

Can someone compare the bass of the DT990 with the DT770?

I have a DT880 at the moment and I'm planning to buy the HD650, but maybe the DT990 would be a better upgrade. I'm looking for a tiny little bit more bass. I listened to the DT770 but that one has too much bass for me.

The DT990 has more bass than the DT770 Consumer 2005 Ed, but less than the DT770 Pro 80. Those two DT770's are VERY different.

Yeah, I know. I heard them both, the pro and the consumer.

Anyway, if the DT990 has more bass than the DT770 (consumer), I don't think it would be my cup of tea. Although it wasn't really the amount of bass that bothered me with the DT770. It was more the quality of the bass. I didn't like the - what I would call - cheap vibrating effect.

Btw, concerning the DT880: if you listen to the DT990 and than switch back to the DT880, do you feel like you're missing something (the bass), or it is just another sound but okay?

IMHO, it's the latter - different sound, but both good. I like them both, and have liked having both around, although since getting the T1's, neither of them gets any use...

Interesting! I hope there will be a chance for me to listen to the DT990 soon.

Thanks to David M. for pointing out the deal at B&H.
This deal made me order the DT990/600. I am impressed with the speed it was sent to me, it only took three days from B&H to The Netherlands. Even with taxes/customs it was less expensive then buying it over here.
I ordered these because I was looking for headphones that would go between the AKG K701 and Ultrasone HFI-780. I love both these headphones for different kinds of music, but sometimes I just want to do some laid back listening while doing something else ( Like I am listening to Diana Krall while typing this).

I do think I have found what I was looking for.
I already like them, and can't wait to find out what burn in does to them.

If you are on the fence here, you should probably buy the DT990 600ohm from B&H. The only reasons I didn't was because I NEED the the best mids I can get, so DT880 600ohm would be much better than the DT990 600ohm. It came at a cost, but I ended up buying the DT880 600ohm Manufaktur that were for sale on these forums. I gave him $415 shipped via Global Express with tracking etc

Only about $60 more than the stock "NEW" DT880 600ohm

I think the general consensus around here is that the

DT990: Bassy, recessed mids but still sound very nice
DT880: Neutral, great mids but not the bass quantity that's in the DT990

the 600 ohm versions need some seriously serious amplication.
when i had dt990 and dt880, both 250 ohm, they were not so difficult to drive. i used them with portable amps such as headsix, pico, d3 python, and i was very satisfied.
when i saw the b&h deal, i had to order one to use with pico which is coming soon. i tried dt990/600 with my friend's predator and a few other portable amps. it sounded very good but the volume was not enough, even at the maxed out level. i tried my brother's some unknown diy desktop amp which drives hd600 and hd650 without any problems, and that was not enough either.
but even with the volume at very low level, i was hearing EVERYTHING, probably the best sound i've heard from headphones. the sound was relaxed but exciting. just the right amount of bass and highs unlike the 250 ohm version, and the mids were great. i think this guy has the potential to sound better than hd600/650 if driven properly.
