Don't worry about the quality control of the newer hifiman models. The older styles were the ones with bad connectors. I'd suggest the he-400i if you want great sound without having to worry about what you're pairing it with amp dac wise.

 
To be fair I think it was a design issue vs. quality control.  The connectors where just too exposed and prone to damage. My He-500 is built like a tank (and weighs nearly as much).

You should go read up about the various connectors problems even for their flagship HE1000 (both V1 and the newest V2). My HEK are fine but many users reported they have various connectors problem, even with replacement units.

Keep in mind that I am not commenting about the SQ but on the overall QC of their products

I found the Velodyne to be quite uncomfortable and never appreciated the sound. They come up on sale often enough, so it's something you can pick up down the line for a low price if you're unsure.
