Sony DRZX701IP for $50: http://www.amazon.com/dp/B005MIIZ3E/

Just wanted to throw in there that this has pretty much been my experience since getting into head-fi a couple months ago. I'm very amused. :-D
I posted a very nice write up on this issue with lots of specifics that a Mod fancied deleting in a previous "deals" thread, so I'll just give a short answer:
Sometimes the manufacturer will honor it.
But here's Senn blatantly selling the same headphone with a warmer sound for more with success. Not everyone is going to like it, I get that part but the pricing and sound and build...
I think it is more to the marketing, imo Sennheiser is much better than Beyerdynamic when it comes to ~brand awareness~
Interesting... I guess the warm signature being the more favorable sound is true if people pay a premium for it. This is if course considering full retail pricing.

I've found many people prefer an overly warm tone, like the HD650, but sometimes a headphone can be too warm. The HD650 is one of those headphones. The super smoothness and rolled treble hurts detail and sense of energy/speed. The rich midrange masks some detail and sounds bloated and a little congested to my ears. The bass is strong and well, not so good. It's bloated up and looses some control in the lower notes.
But I am a person who also enjoys a rich tone, after all I own the HD600, X1, L1, and K601. The HD650 to me is a downgrade in terms of performance, price, and sound signature. I vastly prefer my X1 to the HD650 and HD600, that should tell you something.

Doesn't exactly work like that: Sennheiser set the prices accordingly to the perceived sound quality. I never heard anybody saying the hd598 sounded better (who knows). The engineers have enough expertise to know how a headphone should sound or the frequency response they want to accomplish.
New Beyerdynamic DT-880 Premium 250 Ohms on Amazon from a third-party seller for $230 + shipping: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B000F2BLTM/ref=sr_1_2_olp?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1397527431&sr=1-2&keywords=dt880&condition=new
I'm not sure if I can post this but I'm selling the DT990 (600 ohms) at rock bottom price at the FS thread but I didn't get any enquiry which is very strange...
