At the $150 price bracket some of the smaller thumb drive size dacs sounds quite good like the AudioQuest Dragonfly or the Centrance DacPort Slim

I had the Stoner UD110v2 which I greatly enjoyed as a budget entry dac. My review here. The other budget sub-$100 alternative is the HiFiMEDIY Sabre dac options.

I need a deal on a CHEAP pair of wired headphones for my 14-yr old.  A bit bassy is good given the user.  $30 or under would be best.  These are just going to hold him over until X-mas.  He'll use them with his phone/pad.  Fragile not good, although they rarely leave the house.  The wires do get sat on and pulled pretty good....

Thx in advance Team Deals!

EDIT:  to be clear, no IEM's please.

There are some used AKG K 518 on Amazon. Good headphone. Survived over two years of my middle school aged son until we upgraded him. Also, there is an easy mod to do to improve the sound.

For $20, you could consider the Philips SHL 5500.  See http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004JU0E8K/.  For $30, you could consider the JVX HAS-400 (http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B008P8EXJI) or the Panasonic RP-HTX7-R1 (just below $31 in green, http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B0014IM2RQ).  The Philips is a very comfortable, well isolating on-ear model with a nice mid-centric sound (see http://www.head-fi.org/t/574331/the-philips-shl5500-natural-sounding-can for reviews).  The JVC is also on-ear and arguably the best sounding of the three.  The Panasonic has a classic look that many people like.  You could also save some money and go for the Philips SHL 5000 (on-ear, http://smile.amazon.com/gp/product/B004JU0E7G), the JVC HARX-300 (over-ear, http://smile.amazon.com/JVC-HARX300-Full-Size-Headphones-Black/dp/B000NUYW92), or the Sennheiser HD201 (over-ear).

There are a lot more choices for under $30; these are headphones that I have heard or have given to one of my children as a gift.  I have also given my son the Monoprice 8323; I can assure you that it is not indestructible; in my experience, no headphone is

The UE 4000 is a real pleaser.  Built to sell for ~$80, it's now discontinued and available at ~$30 or under.  I have two or three pair as my 'beater' headphones, and they're just a really nice, good-sounding, basic headphone.  I passed a pair around at work a couple years ago (tired of seeing everybody with cheap/free or worn-out headphones), and literally five or six colleagues wound up buying some.

The cable has an inline mic and play/pause/volume buttons that will control Apple gear.  Comes with a slightly padded carrying bag.  It's not bad-looking (if I'm any judge of 14-year-old tastes, which I'm not).  Amazon link: http://www.amazon.com/gp/offer-listing/B0094S3664

This is a good call.  I bought a pair of these a good while back for dirt cheap for my now 16 yr old but he let our pooch get to them...  We have a lot of that happen....LOL.

Thanks.
