The Beyerdynamic DT48 Arrives...

@svyr: My dt48 is also from the '80's I think. Will be nice to have some more bass on the M10. Curious how they compare frequency wise to the 240DF, which has more treble than the dt48 and about the same level mid bass.

BTW, Drosera, I have just read you have a new toy... How's that Luxman P1u paired with the DT48

When it comes to comparing bass response, I think it's very important to take amplification into account. Bass reproduction can vary strongly with the DT48 and different amps (and also between different DT48 vintages). In my experience, despite the fact that some people seem to be happy in listening to their DT48s with DAPs, the DT48 is actually not that easy to amp well.

Has anyone heard of a driver losing some frequency range? I fixed the cable on my DT48s (flipped the wire at the Y-split and wired a proper stereo plug) and they sound pretty good, but I noticed the right ear is basically missing low bass (maybe under ~150-200Hz?). Does that sound strange to anyone?

The DT-48 itself is strange, but that aside the drivers should sound exactly the same, even if there were a small measurable difference.  What did it sound like before you fixed it?  Can you switch the cable left-to-right and make sure it's the cable and not the driver?  If it's the cable, you may need to get closer to the driver.

Hey guys, finally became part of this group!

Pads need replacing, but can't complain for $50! And it's serial 120!

I was interested in those also, 1960 vintage dt48A. I had no idea how to rewire the two separate plugs into 1 stereo plug, so I had to pass on them. Let us know how they sound. You can use the dt48E pads for better bass response, FWIR

I was just going to use a dual adapter until I recable them next month. Should be getting them by Friday.

Do 5 ohm headphones like those have any special amping requirements? Most amps that I've looked at are designed to work best with 30 - 300ohms or 30-600ohms phones depending upon whether they are designed for high impedance cans... or not.

I wish I could remember with my 5 (or 8) ohm DT-48S what the difference was using the step-up transformer box Beyer supplied, -vs- not using the box.  But they did have a box, and I imagine it would cost $100 or so today if they still sell it.  I do remember that with the box connected between the 'phone and a preamp output they worked just like the higher impedance DT-48, but I can't remember testing them without the box.  Whatever you do, don't plug them into any power amps.  If you didn't blow them up, the noise levels would be very bad.

I tried but all I could get was a 800 x ??? image - too fuzzy to read the print on that page.

Sorry I've been out all day. The listing had a close up pic of thr first page. I'll scan the inside when I get them. The step up transformer is referenced in it. It cost $18 per channel before inflation.

Specialized amplifiers might work. Your best guess is an old integrated pre-amplifier since these will definitely do the trick plus they are sometimes so powerful  that finding the next best headphone amplifier will cost you a fortune.

Thing is, if my 8 ohms DT48E works fine with the Clip + the DT48A could be just as easy to work with. Who knows?
