HD800 deserve every dollar you can put into them. I've tried a cable that had $1000 in parts (parts, not full marked up price including labor) and yeah, worth it. My rule of thumb is spend the cost of the headphones or less. Sometimes you can get it for a lot less and be just as happy, but that's at least what I consider reasonable. A $1400 Voice cable is appropriate for HD800, but not so much for HD650.

Sounds vastly better than five $300 pairs of headphones combined, which is what a lot of head-fiers have. That's why I tell people new to head-fi to start with HD800s and a Compass or something decent until they can afford to go balanced. Why start with HD650 and then get an AKG and a Beyer pair like I did...it was such a waste. They get no head time.

considering beyer is releasing a flagship some will prefer it over hd800 so for them its not as big a problem.

Why that? A $1400 cable would surely increase the performances of a HD650 even more than a humble $200-300 cable... why discouraging HD650 owners to spend, spend, spend...

And be sure that a $3500 cable (yes, yes, just wait 3-4 years, it will surely appear), will transform a HD800 in a true competitor for Orpheus.

For this even an HD 800 with stock cable suffices.

Scootermafia, I've been wanting to ask what you think would be good headphone cables at three price-points, $100, $250, and $500-1000? I'm modding my headphones right now so it'll be able to do detachable balanced cables so I can have different flavors, and now I have a 10 foot blue dragon (which I love for bass and vocals, but sometimes I miss the highs) and will soon make a 4x 24 gauge 99.99% silver 10 foot long with techflex mylar for shielding, and thinking of twisting it this way: Audio Catalog . Any advice on twisting the wires, or other construction materials?

Are you speaking of a HD 800 cable and the HD 800? Originally I have considered the Blue Dragon, but maybe a Silver Dragon would be the better option...

Techflex for shielding? Against EMI? You need a metal fabric or foil for that. I suppose you mean sheathing (since headphone cables don't benefit from shielding anyway).

I'm not sure if twisting has any positive effect at all.

Blue dragon with my pro 900. I think blue dragon would be better for the HD800 than the pro 900 because pro 900 has seriously boosted bass with blue dragon. Techflex makes some mylar sleeving, it is conductive but I'm guessing it is worse than aluminum foil for shielding. Twisting is supposed to make emf cancel out, but it increases capacitance which is bad for high frequencies. If no twisting is needed good I'm lazy ^^.

If that's the case (the capacitance increase) I would renounce it. Headphones aren't afraid of EMF, neither are speakers (unlike components with a signal gain, i.e. amplifiers).

Is it as good as that, the HD800? (serious question). Do you consider it close to Orpheus???

(unserious comment): Then for sure with one of those uber-expensive aftermarket cables (Lawton, Stefan etc) it would beat the Orpheus by a laaaaaaaaaaarge margin...
