The Audio Technica W3000ANV Thread

Heard the LCD-3 for a few minutes the other day.  W3000 seemed better for most trance/vocal based music wheras the LCD-3 seemed to sound better on guitars/ other genres.  Just my experience after trying the LCD-3 for 5min tops and can't comment on the LCD-2

I like them as much as I do the LCD2, but for different reasons.  The LCD2 is the better all a rounder, better with male vocals, and is like a full range speaker.  W3k is great for female vocals, makes compressed files sound better, and has a very engaging, lively sound.

After being out of the hobby for a while, I finally caved in and bought a pair of these from A2A (my first headphone-related purchase in a couple of years).   I'll consider it a little present to myself after a good 2012.

I've been eyeballing the ATH-W1000Xs for the last six months but the leather earpads on these are what tipped me over the edge.  From the impressions I've read, they should be a good compliment to my 650s.  I'm really looking forward to the first listen.

Hi guys, do these cans pair better with tubed or solid state amps? I have heard they pair the best with the Yamamoto headamp (can't quite recall the model number). I have a transformer coupled tube amp and the vintage Pioneer SX-1280 so hopefully either one will make it sound good

I have listened to these phones with three amps, a Leben CS-600 integrated rolled with NOS RCA's and NOS Sylvanias, an EAR HP4 rolled with NOS RCA's and the highly regarded SS Bakoon Amp-11R. I experience a low level hum with the Leben since these are highly sensitive cans which eliminates that amp from consideration. While the Bakoon is a fine SS integrated, the W3k sounds absolutely magical with the EAR. A synergistic match made in heaven with an absolutely dead silent background.

So, now that the dust has settled, how many people have held on to their W3000ANV and are still using them? Any long-term impressions? I'm curious.

Still loving them over here. They never fail to let me enjoy what I'm listening to. Haven't bought a new pair of headphones in this long a time in the last 10 years. With rare exceptions, it's W3000 and LCD-3 for me thee days.

Very happy with my W3000. Had then on last night even though I just picked up some HE-6 a week ago. My preference goes like this....HE-6 > W3000 > LCD-2 r1.

So much luxury.

What do you think about your JVC Victor DX1000 compared to the ANvs?

The anv bests the jvc pretty much in all aspects.

The JVC is less detailed, less intimate, darker and has a bit of grain. Definitely more mid fi than high end. I do enjoy its coloration and sound staging but the JVC doesn't really get much head time.  I occasionally pull it out for some serious reggae listening and to enjoy its unique presentation. I should probably sell it, but something keeps from doing so.

Very well said. There was a long time I thought I would never sell the JVC. But a few months after getting the W3000, the DX1000 were indeed sold, and I've not missed them, enjoyable though they are.

Despite how colored they are and thinking that I would eventually get sick of them, the W3000ANV are still around. They've been relegated to PC now duties, driven from the headphone out of these craptastic Creative speakers. Surprising, it's a good match which seems to alleviate that odd cupped-hands coloration.
