The Astell & Kern AK240

I would envy you, if that works for you.
It was the other way around. I bought better headphones to improve listening over my iPhone, then I realized the iPhone is not good enough for the headphone. New DAP, damn the headphone is not good enough.... 1 year later I have bought the Hugo, the AK100MKII, AK120 Titan, AK100II, AK120II and the AK240 and have in parallel the IE800, SE846 and the Noble K10.

The K10 has brought me salvation, because the difference between the Hugo and the AK240 is small enough, that I can stick with only the AK240. I might even just keep the AK120II because it's so close with the K10 to the Hugo and AK240.

I definitely don't want to go back to iPhone or MacBook direct play.
My point is, maybe you first need to find the right headphone for your likings :wink:

And be prepared to spend the money, my Grado GR10 is doing really well, with minor modification, on my iPod Touch and or iPhone 5s. At home, the AK10 give some more grunt,on the road the iPod,Iphone are more than good enough. You did spend a little fortune on your units so far Bechti, which is absolutely ok, if you have the money, but I haven´t and try to make out the best from a limited budget which works pretty well,

@kerrys30:

Head fi'er onlychild had bothe the rwak120b/intruder combo and the ak240 and concluded that to him the 120 rig sounded better. I think he posted that in this thread or the ak120 thread, but you can always pm him too for his insights. At the end of the day though, trust your ears and whatever makes you happy :)

Thanks chrissc. I'll Have a read of his posts.

I should have written bought and sold :wink:

I have only kept the K10 and the AK240. It wasn't a cheap way of finding out the right set for me, but I had to test it myself :D

What headphones do you guys use for the balanced output?
Is it possible to use any other cable other than the accessory from ak?
Also when pairing with an amp is it possible to use the micro usb to usb type b as a line out? Thought it best to ask first before trying out the combinations, thinking of pairing it with an idsd device.

Many aftermarket cable makers produce cables to work with AK models

AK240 does not work as a USB host for external USB DAC. you will need to use its optical out to connect to your external DAC.

  Comparison between these and the AK100 Mk-II? Also, how does the battery life hold up playing 16/44.1 flac on the AK240? If its less than 24hrs on a full charge, I won't consider getting one.

Then you can forget getting any of these DAPs. The only 'audiophile' DAP reaching that duration is Sony.
