The Astell & Kern AK240
Mar 3, 2014 at 2:12 PM Post #2,176 of 9,131
I've ran into that problem myself recently on a recently purchased Dell Venue Pro 8 (Win 8.1 x86) when trying to install the MQS Streaming Server program.

I've reported to the dev team and I'm hopeful an update will address this issue. I'll keep you guys updated.

Thx! :)

I've just noticed they might not be the micro, if not apologies, and I'm glad you asked because I nearly ordered one.

Is there balanced out?

Does the SQ beat the HiFi m8?  I realize the form factor is better, duh lol

Yes it does. I've had the AK120 and man the AK240 is a lot better. It's amazing the sound quality coming out of something so small.

BTW ALO said, and I quote, if I wanted a balanced cable 'special' for my IE800 that they 'would ask the guys to CONSIDER doing it'. Jess, are they retired Merchant Bankers. Nearly did a typo there.

Hey, bankers are not all evil!

That said, it's a nice thought to own a stock (unbalanced) IE800 and a balanced IE800. Though IE800 is far from new now, it's still the best dynamic earphone out there and I seriously cannot see the possibility of another dynamic earphone beating it soon, even Sennheiser themselves. As crazy as it sounds, personally I think getting another pair of IE800 is a CONSIDERable investment. :p

Yeh, agree big time. I love my Sennheiser IE800 too

BTW, if you're a banker, you're here and love your head-fi.
They can't all be bad :)

Any benefit to using the Centrence HiFi-M8 with the AK240? Are you simply using the DAC in the HiFi-M8 instead of the AK240?

The dac in the AK240 is much better than the dac in the HiFi-M8.

Also why pay that amount of money for a transport? you also wouldn't be able to play native DSD files. No point really.

That's what I was thinking as well but I've seen a few posts questioning the amp power in the AK240 to drive some headphones. I would imagine most IEMs will be fine but how does one approach driving headphones such as the TH-900, HD800, LCD-3, etc?

Lol I use my desktop dac/amp to drive my HD800 and LCD3... really no point to use a portable source to drive these open headphones.  More so for the HD800, Hifi-M8 is still far (EDIT: more) from adequate to do justice for these flagships.

Never had the HD800 but did read in the AK240 review (Balanced Output section)
http://www.head-fi.org/t/707432/review-astell-kern-ak240

that "That said, we did have a chance to hear an HD 800 in balanced mode (via an adaptor) the last time we visited with Astell & Kern. It was a brief listen, but it was bloody fantastic." It's in the AK240 review but does not precisely talk of a stand alone AK240/HD800 combo. I'm making the presumption.

I'm typing this with my tongue firmly in my cheek (whoops) (or is it cheque) but, if the AK240 drives the HD800, then a lot of desktop gear is going to be quickly recycled through the FS pages.

I have asked Centrance the same question about the dac comparing between the M8 and AK100/120/240,  and got the difference answer from the head engineer of Centrance.

I was told:  ''the dac on HiFi-M8 is believed to be more competent compare to the dac on AK240 ( better than the one AK100/AK120 ), dual dacs doesn't really mean "better'', balance output is the key though''

However, Native DSD playback is a very good function indeed.
